Michigan DNR to buy 10,000 acres in Keweenaw Peninsula

The state of Michigan plans to purchase 10,000 acres in the Keweenaw Peninsula from 32,541 acres the Nature Conservancy acquired at the end of 2022. 
That was the message DNR public land specialist Scott Whitcomb recently told the audience at a meeting in the Allouez Township Hall in Keweenaw County. The land is referred to as the Keweenaw Heartlands.

Man dies in drowning incident on Lake of the Woods

A man died in a fatal drowning on Lake of the Woods on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, according to the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office. 
The press release from the sheriff’s office said the agency was notified of a possible drowning at 8:12 a.m. on Dec. 28. The drowning was at Northwest Angle near Flag Island on Lake of the Woods.

Lake Erie walleye hatch again is a good one in Western, Central basins

After waiting an extra agonizing three months again for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to share its sampling data with their Ohio counterparts, the Ohio Division of Wildlife issued a press release on Dec. 14 that announced the 2023 Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch young-of-year trawling results. 
The summer trawls offer the first look at predicting future fishing prospects for these most popular two species.

Drone operator busted by Pennsylvania Game Commission after undercover operation

An undercover operation by the Pennsylvania Game Commission has led to several charges filed against the owner of a drone deer-recovery business. 
The Game Commission filed four citations against Joshua Wingenroth, of Downingtown, Pa., for an incident that occurred on Dec. 6 at the Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve in Lancaster County.

Pennsylvania bills to address crop damage would also add a 10th seat to PGC board

Several senators are working on legislation to further enhance hunting as a tool to address crop damage on farms in Pennsylvania. 
The legislation is currently being drafted but is expected to be introduced as a group of four bills early this year. In addition to crop damage, one of the bills will also create a 10th seat on the Pennsylvania Game Commission board to be filled by someone from the agriculture community.
