Top 10 hunting and fishing movies to watch during these long winter nights

Selecting 10 top hunting and fishing films should be fun, right? Yet for the staff of Outdoor News, it was tougher than it sounds, because there are surprisingly few good ones.
Campy titles exist that portray Hollywood’s view of long-underwear-clad, modern Elmer Fudds stumbling about, but they’re more cringy than funny. If a solid spoof of hunting truly existed – say Caddyshack meets deer camp – we’d enjoy it and include it here. Until then, the 10 flicks we’ve selected here contain some form of hunting and fishing, but generally, they’re solid survival movies with good acting.

Steve Sarley: Outdoor shows in Illinois still lure us; here are some to consider

I fondly recall the “good old days” of my youth, when one of the highlights of the year was attending the huge outdoors show that was held annually at the International Amphitheater on Chicago’s south side.
It was a phenomenal exhibit of all things fishing, filling the hall with booth after booth. The host and emcee for the event was John Bromfield. Bromfield was a movie and television cowboy who rode into the show’s hall on his white stallion, wearing a white cowboy hat.

Minnesota’s winter trout season begins soon with plenty of interested anglers

Weather permitting, the ice of lakes in Minnesota that contain stream and lake trout will begin hosting trout anglers on Saturday, Jan. 13, when the trout season opens. The popularity of ice fishing for trout has grown in the metro area, while the northeast and southeast locations of the state have retained yearly traditions of excellent size and quantity in its bodies of water.
The season begins Dec. 30 for trout in lakes within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Steve Weisman: Don’t ever give up in fight to protect Iowa’s lakes and rivers

As a former teacher and coach, I’ve always liked motivational speakers and quotes that challenge us to do better and to “reach for the stars.” There are a lot of great ones out there, but there is one that still gives me goose bumps. This one belongs to the inspirational message by the late Jim Valvano.
