Illinois deer harvest drops during gun season, despite addition of rifle hunting

Southern Illinois again dominated the list of top-harvesting counties during this year’s firearms deer season, but a slight drop in the number of deer taken overall puts to rest a notion that allowing single-shot rifles would dramatically increase harvest statewide.
It also brings up a decades-old question asked by hunters each time the harvest slides: how many deer are there in Illinois?

One of two elk that wandered into Illinois hit by semi

After trekking hundreds of miles across Wisconsin and into Illinois, a male elk died after it was struck by a semi-truck southwest of Chicago.
The bull elk was four years old and part of the Black River Falls elk herd. He was spotted far from his home range in recent months, his movements captured by trail cameras and onlookers as he traveled in search of a new mate.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Why did the DNR’s chief game warden not present Shikar Safari Club award at NRB meeting?

You’ll find a news story by veteran reporter Tim Eisele on Brian Knepper, a Wisconsin DNR game warden who received this year’s Shikar Safari Club award at the Dec. 13 Natural Resources Board meeting in Madison.
In the past, the DNR’s chief game warden has typically presented this award to the recipient, so it seemed quite unusual that DNR Chief Conservation Warden Casey Krueger was not in the room that day to present the award to Knepper.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Tom Boop’s deer column elicits mixed opinions from Pennsylvania hunters

I asked him why the tragedy affected him so deeply, given that he didn’t know Seville, and his response will no doubt resonate with many aging hunters. “I will turn 69 in a few days, and I have had double hip replacements,” he said. “So I understand the challenge of treestands.

Savvy techniques for catching crappies on the ice

For a moment, this silver-sided crappie glistened like the cold winter sun and the early morning reflection on the ice.
Fresh from the frozen lake, the crappie was a feather in my cap. It was that much of a joy to catch. Crappies aren’t an easy take on the ice and this first-of-the-morning – a plump 14-incher no less – required a trick that fishermen would call a “finesse tactic.”
