Return of fish species signal potential for delisting Sand Hill River stretch in northwestern Minnesota

The return of redhorse species of fish to a stretch of the Sand Hill River in Polk County reflects improving trends that could lead to removal from the state’s impaired waters list as early as 2026.
“Overall, things are looking much improved in terms of fish passage,” Murphy Steininger, who led the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency monitoring crew and reviewed the results, said in November. “We’ve definitely documented some improvements.”

Michigan conservation officers help transport injured Wisconsin hunter out of woods in Iron County

Ed Mongin, 81, of Coleman, Wis., was hunting with a group of 10 others on federal land Nov. 17 in Iron County, Mich., when the top of a tree fell and struck him on the head, causing severe injury.
The group of hunters, whose members were all from Wisconsin except one from Colorado, were familiar with the area and were using radios to stay in communication. When Mongin didn’t answer an attempt to contact him, the group went to his hunting location and found the fallen section of the tree on top of him, blown down in a windstorm.

Demolition project at Iowa’s Springbrook State Park draws concern from commission

A plan to demolish five buildings at Springbrook State Park ran into opposition last Thursday at the monthly meeting of the Iowa Natural Resources Commission, with at least two board members expressing concern that the project could bring a wave of protests from the public.
At heart is the proposed demolition of a 54-year-old classroom/office building, a dining hall and three dormitory buildings at the site, located in Guthrie County.

On pace for a similar harvest to last year, Iowa deer hunters shift attention to muzzleloader, archery, antlerless hunts

With the two shotgun seasons now in the books, Iowa’s deer hunting shifts to a more solitary endeavor with the opening of the late muzzleloader season and the reopening of the archery season.
Jace Elliott, state deer biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said roughly 15,000-20,000 hunters will participate in the late muzzleloader season and likely harvest about 10,000 deer.

Minnesota DNR, partners move forward with moose habitat planning

The Minnesota DNR received a grant of nearly half a million dollars in November 2022 to focus on moose habitat in the northeastern part of the state. During 2023, workshops happened and planning teams formed with various organizations and partners across the state to focus on moose habitat.
Megan Eiting, DNR collaborative moose habitat planner, said she’s seen progress with the grant, and she’s hoping to have a strategy in place by the end of 2024 to implement.
