Commentary: It’s tough times for Michigan’s Great Lakes steelhead

Times are tough for the steelhead in lakes Michigan and Huron and they may get tougher.

Invasive quagga mussels now carpet the bottoms of both lakes and their filter feeding has greatly reduced the plankton levels. This in turn has reduced the availability of food for alewives, the primary forage for the lakes’ salmon and trout.

Outdoor Observations: Michigan bucking a negative trend related to Atlantic salmon populations

The state of Michigan likes to be a trendsetter.
Michigan took the lead in raising funds to keep invasive Asian carp out of the Great Lakes and contribute more funds to that effort than any other individual state. Leadership in Lansing is pushing to have Michigan lead the way on electronic vehicle usage and manufacturing. Now our DNR Fisheries Division and its colleagues at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie are taking the lead and bucking a negative trend related to Atlantic salmon.

Number of species considered threatened with extinction grows by 2,000 from 2022

Atlantic salmon isn’t yet threatened with extinction, but its population dropped by nearly a quarter from 2006 to 2020, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which tracks biodiversity around the globe, said recently.
It’s now considered near threatened. They live in fewer places and face human-created hazards like dams and water pollution. Climate change is making it harder for the fish to find food and easier for alien species to compete, according to the group.

Commentary: You have to wonder what some Pennsylvania hunting clubs have to hide

The bylaws of the hunting club I belong to specifically state that game wardens shall have access to our lease at all times.
We provide all area wardens with the combination to our gate locks and welcome – encourage actually – their presence on our lease. We invite them to our functions and annual events. Why? Because we want our members to obey the game laws and we have nothing in or associated with our club that we’re trying to hide.

Try ice fishing Lake Jean, Ricketts Glen State Park in Pennsylvania

If Ricketts Glen State Park was Las Vegas, the Glens Natural Area would be its headliner.
A National Natural Landmark, the Glens is home to 22 named waterfalls, the largest being 94-foot-tall Ganoga Falls. Crowds of people visit, especially on weekends, to hike past all that tumbling water. But no one goes to Vegas just for the headliners, and no one – no anglers, anyway – should go to Ricketts Glen just to hike.
