Men charged with killing 3,600 birds, including bald and golden eagles, to sell on black market

Two men killed about 3,600 birds, including bald and golden eagles, during a “killing spree” on Montana’s Flathead Indian Reservation and elsewhere, then sold eagle parts on a black market that has been a long-running problem for U.S. wildlife officials, a federal grand jury indictment says.
The men worked with others to hunt and kill the birds, according to the indictment, and in at least one instance used a dead deer to lure in an eagle that was shot.

Late season pheasant hunting offers great rewards for those willing to work for it

My late grandfather’s farewell performance as a pheasant hunter – a seven-decade recurring role – took center stage on a particularly brutal December day in eastern South Dakota in the mid-1990s.
I thought about my grandfather the other day after a wide-ranging conversation on the subject with Tom Carpenter, magazine editor at Pheasants Forever. Carp, as he’s often called, is a bird hunter of five decades who could not care less about the elements, for he’s going to put on his boots and hunt no matter what.
Here are some of Carpenter’s thoughts on how to approach late-season pheasant hunting.

Opportunity to mentor young hunter ends with a giant mountain buck in New York’s Adirondacks

The ice crackled like the noise of a small pebble being thrown through a glass window, and my breath floated into the frigid air as I looked over my scope. The deer would be in sight in seconds, and I waited for an opportunity young hunters dream about.
Suddenly, he appeared in an opening and paused to check his surroundings. Easing the safety forward, the pressure against my index finger increased ever so slightly before the silence of the cold, calm November morning was shattered.

Pennsylvania’s bear harvest declines in 2023

For the first time since 2007 Pennsylvania’s bear harvest is on track to be below 3,000.
But according to a Pennsylvania Game Commission biologist, that doesn’t necessarily mean the state’s bear population has dropped. As of Dec. 10, the unofficial 2023 bear harvest stood at 2,898 for the early, statewide and extended seasons combined. Last year, hunters harvested 3,170 bears overall, down from 3,621 in 2021 and far below the record of 4,653 which occurred in 2019.

Jeremiah Haas: Success in the deer woods is about showing up

Most of us do not get to spend all day and night engaged in the outdoors. Time availability in the field changes during your life as you gain responsibilities and obligations. When I was in college, I was in a treestand 45 to 60 days each fall.
Now it seems like I can count those treestand days on two hands. While the obligations are more important, the draw to the woods is constant and nagging.
