Mark Nale: Here’s my idea of a perfect Pennsylvania Game and/or Fish & Boat Commissioner

A bill before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives would give license buyers in specific districts a chance to select commissioners for both the Game Commission and Fish & Boat Commission. Currently, candidates are fielded by the Governor’s Council on Hunting, Fishing and Conservation, nominated by the governor, and then confirmed by the Senate.
License buyers — what should a candidate for commissioner look like? As a long-time purchaser of both hunting and fishing licenses, and also as someone who has attended numerous meetings held by both agencies, I will give you my take on the subject.

Giant City State Park superintendent, Calvin Beckmann, named Illinois DNR Chief of Parks

After 10 years as the site superintendent at Giant City State Park, Calvin Beckmann is taking a step up the DNR ladder. He recently assumed his new role of the DNR’s Chief of Parks.
Beckmann assumed the leadership at Giant City when DNR was still negotiating its way out of the financial crisis that rocked state budgets earlier in the century. The unassuming Beckmann downplayed his role in steering the park through tough times.

Hunters can access their own FOID card information in Illinois

Illinois hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts are keeping a close eye on the latest legal wrangling over the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card system, which has been under fire in recent years.
A FOID card is required to purchase firearms and ammunition in the state. In a recent move, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that people may obtain records about their own FOID card, but they may not use the state’s Freedom of Information Act to do so.

Illinois native Chad Morgenthaler lured out of retirement for chance to qualify for another Bassmaster Classic

A retired professional bass angler originally from Illinois has given in to the urge to compete. It appears the possibility of qualifying for the 2024 Bassmaster Classic pulled Chad Morgenthaler back into a sport he competed in for two decades.
A native of Coulterville in southern Illinois, Morgenthaler was a firefighter in Carbondale before rising to the level of professional fisherman. Morgenthaler “retired” from Bassmaster Elite Series competition after the 2022 season. The veteran of seven Bassmaster Classic appearances thought he had “closed the door.”

Late season hunting, more available on western New York’s Mount Pleasant State Forest

Sportsmen hearing the words “Chautauqua County” might immediately think of Chautauqua Lake, and with good reason. The big western New York water is regarded as one of the finest fisheries in the state, with walleyes, bass, muskellunge, and panfish attracting scores of anglers during both the open-water and ice-fishing seasons.
But Chautauqua County and, in fact, all of DEC’s Region 9 also offers some superb hunting for both big and small game.

Holiday Reading List: Gift ideas from the New York outdoor enthusiast’s bookshelf

What’s better than winding down after a long hunting season, nestled under a cozy blanket in your favorite armchair with a good book? Not a whole lot in my humble opinion, except maybe gifting this experience to someone else.
With that in mind, here are our New York Outdoor News curated book selections for gift-giving this holiday season. Most are from authors who reside or have worked right here in New York.
