Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signs Shabbona Lake State Park over to Potawatomi Nation

More than 175 years after their reservation in Illinois was illegally sold at auction, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is now in line to get their land back.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation on March 21 authorizing DNR to hand over to the tribe the ownership title to Shabbona Lake State Park, a 1,500-acre tract in southern DeKalb County that largely overlaps the tribe’s original reservation.

Measure allows tribe to acquire Illinois state park

Nearly two centuries after losing its reservation in Illinois in a land sale that most people now concede was illegal, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation could soon get its land back.
In the final hours of a lame duck session on Jan. 7, the Illinois House gave final approval to a bill authorizing the state to hand over to the tribe a 1,500-acre state park in DeKalb County, land that largely overlaps the tribe’s original reservation.

Illinois legislation proposes $1 sale of Shabbona Lake and State Park to Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation

A bill that would help the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation expand their newly established reservation by receiving what is now Shabbona Lake and State Park advanced out of a state House committee, despite concerns about the tribe’s long-term plans for the DeKalb County property.
House Bill 4718 would authorize the state to hand over Shabbona to the tribe for $1.  It also allows the tribe and DNR to enter into a land management agreement under which the land would remain open to the public for recreational use for an unspecified period.

Hunters can access their own FOID card information in Illinois

Illinois hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts are keeping a close eye on the latest legal wrangling over the Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card system, which has been under fire in recent years.
A FOID card is required to purchase firearms and ammunition in the state. In a recent move, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that people may obtain records about their own FOID card, but they may not use the state’s Freedom of Information Act to do so.
