Wisconsin Mixed Bag: Natural Resources Board to meet Dec. 13 in Madison

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) will meet in-person at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, in Room G09, State Natural Resources Building (GEF2), 101 S. Webster Street, Madison, to consider several proposed rulemaking documents, a proposed land sale and donations. The public may watch the meeting on the DNR’s YouTube channel.

Ask a fisheries biologist: No, pike don’t lose their teeth

Some time ago, I asked about fishing rumors or myths that people have heard and a friendly reader reminded me of an interesting rumor concerning northern pike. The myth – and it is a myth – is that pike lose their teeth at certain times of the year and do not feed again until they grow back.

University of Wisconsin students, staff work worthy cause with Green Bay wild rice restoration project

A story about the Green Bay wild rice restoration project serves as one more reminder of just how fortunate we are here in Wisconsin to have so many volunteers who invest their time, talent, and income on natural resource projects. Those volunteers work right alongside conservation professionals when the situations allow so we can accomplish more for the natural resources of this state.

Partnerships key in 10-year project dedicated to restoring wild rice along west shore of Wisconsin’s Green Bay

A 10-year project to restore wild rice beds all along the west shore of Green Bay continued this fall as state and federal employees joined forces with a lot of volunteers from several directions to seed roughly 1,300 pounds of wild rice along the bay.
“It’s been a unique partnership to work on this project. I don’t think any of us could have done this alone. We’re planting quite a few sites along the west shore,” said Dave Halfmann, Wisconsin DNR wildlife biologist and property manager for the Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area near Peshtigo.

Wisconsin legislators schedule listening sessions with public after deer harvest drop in Northern Forest Zone

Northern Wisconsin deer hunters looking at the buck kill decline from this season when compared to 2022 (down 26.6%) and the five-year average (down 14.3%) expected to see some sort of drop in three to five counties that experienced a difficult winter, but they find themselves short of answers across the rest of the Northern Forest Zone.
They’re not alone. The buck kill dropped in every management zone, but by low single digits of percent – nothing close to what was seen in the Northern Forest Zone. In fact, disappointment among deer hunters reached such a point that legislators in two areas of the state called for listening sessions.

Ben Moyer: Selfless steelhead angler an example all can learn from

Hopefully, the young man described below is an Outdoor News reader and will recognize himself here. I didn’t ask him, as the moment was his. There was no call to identify myself in that way, at that time. We were two strangers on a stream.
Days before that, I’d decided to go to Erie, Pa., to try and catch a steelhead. This is not something I’ve had much success with on earlier attempts.

Well-hidden whitetails: Here are three types of cover that hold late-season deer

The bulk of the bow deer season is in the rearview mirror. General rifle and shotgun seasons are over, as well. This leaves a bit of muzzleloader season and the final weeks of the archery season to fill your tag. Without a well-managed property and a curated deer buffet to work with, this is no easy task.
It is doable, however. While much of the typical late-season focus is on food sources, a better bet for getting close to a daylight mover is often to focus on certain types of bedding cover.

Fishing stays hot until ice covers the water of Michigan’s Lake St. Clair

Sometimes you have to change your game plan.
Originally, we were going to fish the Detroit River, which is almost as outstanding in the fall as it is in the spring, but my brother, Phil, who set up the trip, said he wanted to get in some perch fishing (which has also been very good), too. So, Steve Van Assche, the skipper, said we might as well fish walleyes on Lake St. Clair, which has been producing like Lake Erie this season.

James Lindner: Get back to the basics for early-ice panfish

In our neck of the woods, the open-water fishing season officially has ended. As I’m writing this, my boat has been winterized and is in storage for the foreseeable future.
In general, early ice fishing is a sort of boot-strap affair – a spud bar in one hand and small sled with all the basics in the other. I try to keep things to a minimum – an auger, a couple of rods, a small box of baits, and some electronics. For me, and many other anglers, the primary targets for first ice are crappies and bluegills.
