The story of one Pennsylvania hunter demonstrates how tick bites can be a ticking time bomb

Tony Hudak has traveled across North America hunting wild turkeys, and it’s rare that a gobbler sends him home with an unfilled tag.
The resident of Luzerne County, Pa., is one of a handful of hunters to achieve the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Super Slam – harvesting a gobbler in all 49 states where wild turkeys exist (Alaska the lone exception).
Now, Hudak is traveling the country again, working on his second Super Slam. The quest was nearly derailed, however, not by an elusive bird but a tiny bug.

Cool discovery: Fish Ohio angler’s journal uncovered

Sometimes it takes a good idea a while to germinate and then sprout before blossoming.
Perhaps that will be the case with a really cool and practical Ohio Division of Wildlife fishing-related document that practically no angler has ever heard of, much less seen or handled. That case is even true for some wildlife division officials. What we have is a 17-sheet/doubled-sided, spiral bound document called the “Fish Ohio Journal.” The first 25 pages are all identical and highlight components that smart anglers would want to record for posterity and future reference.

Three waterfowl species subject to be renamed

The American Ornithological Society plans in 2024 to begin renaming up to 80 bird species, and three waterfowl species – Ross’s goose, Barrow’s goldeneyes, and Steller’s eiders – are likely to be among the birds that are given new names.
AOS, the recognized authority on bird naming in North America, plans to rename all species that are named after people. In a Nov. 1 press release, the AOS announced the changes are being made “in an effort to address past wrongs and engage far more people in the enjoyment, protection, and study of birds.”

Kirk Schnitker: Minnesota agencies – MDH, MPCA, MDA – are failing citizens

During the past year, the Minnesota DNR has gotten clobbered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for failing to follow federal law in managing certain forest properties for wildlife and for not properly documenting their management.
Some $20 million were held back from the state for its failures, though they now have been released.

Strategic (devious) plan nets big fish while on family vacation

My wife says our vacations are always fishing trips. Wrong!
Obviously, she forgot the times our fall vacations took us to South Dakota for ducks and pheasants, or the time we went down to the Rio Grande where I went quail hunting every day. Just saying. It’s not my fault two of my brothers and I owned boats and that family vacations on my side of the family were often planned around fishing and boating.
