Minnesota and Wisconsin bear harvest take big hit thanks to good food year

The 2023 bear hunting season closed on Oct. 15 and the Minnesota DNR saw a significant decrease in harvest totals, according DNR preliminary reports. Dan Stark, DNR large carnivore specialist, said the decline is mainly due to good natural food conditions that kept bears away from bait stations.
Stark compared the hunting season to 2018 where numbers dropped based on good food conditions. He added that after several years of high harvest, having a slower season can sometimes balance the population.

As duck hunting ends in Minnesota, late goose heats up

State officials say there’s still ample time for waterfowlers who don’t mind braving the blustery Minnesota weather to scratch their itch for a late-season hunt. Call it Minnesota’s last call for waterfowl.
While the duck season (in the central and south zones) runs through Nov. 26, the goose-hunting season goes deep into December, with the north zone running through Dec. 22. The central and south zones close Dec. 27.

Minnesota’s total deer harvest down 7% from 2022 through Nov. 19

The firearms deer kill in Minnesota struggled to gain ground through the season’s third weekend, and the DNR reports that cumulative statewide deer harvest across all seasons is down 7% from 2022.
As the northeast’s 16-day season wrapped up on Sunday, Nov. 19, the cumulative white-tailed deer kill through all seasons was 142,142. In addition to being behind last year, that’s 14% below the five-year mean and 10% off the 10-year mean.

When the north wind blows and ducks arrive, be there

With the north wind bucking, it was time to get to the slough and greet the new arrivals of waterfowl that wing into the Minnesota prairies every time the old northern howls.
For 60-plus years, our crew has been celebrating the waterfowling season by gathering for a reunion hunt. This year, Donny Lien joined us after driving from his home in Plainview. Steve and Sue Aagesen came from Paynesville, and my son Will and I traveled only six miles from Appleton to “make the scene,” as we used to say.

Minnesota’s Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Crappie bite at its best in late fall

With the unseasonably warm weather, it seems like walleyes really started their fall bite later this year. It’s unusual to be able to fish comfortably during deer season, but this year is the exception.
I love to fish for walleyes, but my favorite fishing this time of year is for late-season crappies.
