Firearm season is beginning in Illinois and about 100,000 deer are going to be harvested over the next few weekends.
While the joy of the hunting experience is always a highlight, the true gift is the 30 to 40 pounds of meat you receive from your doe, or significantly more if you are fortunate enough to harvest a large buck. Minnesota’s 2023 white-tailed deer harvest increased from the first weekend.
In the mid-1960s, Wisconsin had a “party permit” rule that was considered racy by a good share of the deer hunters – four people could apply as a group for one extra deer tag, which could be used only on an antlerless deer.
Some of the ditches dredged by the heels of deer hunters resisting even this small step toward deer herd control are deep enough, I believe, to qualify as trout streams if filled with enough cold water.
