Still-hunting the big woods of Maine provides valuable lessons

Snow came early to northeastern Maine this deer season, arriving about mid-morning on Oct. 30, which was opening day for non-residents.
My two New York hunting partners – Rick Goodman, of our Iron Sight Gang Adirondack crew, and Matt Novak, both from Warren County, and myself, were hitting the thick Maine woods. Guiding us was our friend, Randy Flannery, who runs Wilderness Escape Outfitters in Danforth, not far from the Canadian border.

Outdoor Insights: Minnesota’s CWD management practices proving to be quite successful by comparison

Last week’s Outdoor News reported a couple of new positive chronic wasting disease cases, one near Grand Rapids and the other around Northfield. That’s two too many, and with firearms hunting under way, expect more.
Through last Sunday, there were many results pending but no new positives. Our neighbor to the east proves it could be worse.

Minnesota’s 2023 fall turkey-hunt harvest, license sales are stable

The Minnesota DNR released preliminary reports from the 2023 season and saw an increase in licenses sold, but a slight decrease in turkey harvest.

Tim Lyons, DNR upland game research scientist, said the biggest takeaway from the report is that there’s been a consistency during the past three years with fall turkey-hunting license sales and harvest numbers.

Hunting for a place to hunt? Disabled opportunities abound in Illinois’ outdoors

One of the areas that I have always felt that the Illinois DNR really shines is the number of disabled opportunities that an outdoor enthusiast can find throughout DNR properties. I’ve also long felt like these opportunities are not as well known as they should be.

Cornell University’s Wildlife Health Center fighting on many fronts

As you sit in your treestand this fall, cheetahs in Namibia are probably the last thing on your mind.
Yet those cats, or the roaming dogs in Nepal or even the coral off the Dominican Republic coast play a part in the health of not only that white-tailed deer you’re hoping to harvest, but your own well being. Veterinarians at Cornell University’s Wildlife Health Center know they are all connected – the animals, their environment, and people around the world. That’s the One Health concept.
