Over 57,000 people applied for the chance to hunt Pennsylvania elk in 2023.
And the state’s biggest elk season is about to get underway. The general elk season opens Monday, Oct. 30 and runs six days through Saturday, Nov. 4. While Pennsylvania now has three separate seasons for elk – a two-week archery season in September, the general season and a late season that begins Dec. 30 – the general season is tops in participation, with half of available elk licenses used in the general season.

With help from a little sunshine and somewhat stable weather, the walleye bite has picked up around the area. Plenty of trophy walleye have been caught this week on the river and area lakes. The perch bite has been a different story, but will hopefully change soon.

Nearly $10 million in grants were awarded by two federal agencies for projects in Pennsylvania and surrounding states aimed at improving the Chesapeake Bay.Â
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued $9.6 million to 10 community-based projects to protect and restore the bay and its tributary rivers and streams. The money was derived from the Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund’s Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reductions Program as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which will provide $238 million over five years for programs helping to restore the Chesapeake Bay.Â

The problem with October is there isn’t enough of it. It’s all happening in October. Climb up in a treestand, set decoys, run your bird dogs… so many choices, so little time.
And fishing? The water temperature is dropping, the walleyes are heading shallower, the bass have strapped on the feedbag, the steelhead are entering the rivers… how do you know what you do? I recently spent a morning on Lake Erie chasing perch, which is always a viable option in October. I wasn’t at all disappointed.
