Commentary: To be a better shooter, spend your money on targets, ammo, not guns

With bird-hunting seasons in full swing, hunters are finding success – occasionally, if not consistently. Dove hunters who’ve switched to grouse hunting may feel deflated when repeated flushes of grouse are missed.
Grouse hunting in Minnesota is often best in dense aspen stands with an abundant shrub story of hazel and dogwood. Successful gunners find that an instinctive shooting style is necessary to catch the sudden, unpredictable flushes.

Nix the “Git it done” syndrome that engulfs modern-day hunting culture

Earlier this week, on the eve of a new hunting season, I enjoyed a phone conversation with a friend.
“Enjoyed,” though, isn’t the right word because my friend is an avid and skilled bowhunter, and throughout the call we shared mutual concerns about contemporary trends in hunting – what those misgivings portend for the future, and what the trends say about our modern motivations to hunt. Because of its gravity, our discourse was more endurance than enjoyment.

Minnesota’s bear harvest likely to decrease in 2023

Bear hunters and guides alike knew the competition would be stiff going into this year’s Minnesota bear-hunting season, which began Sept. 1 and ends Sunday. That competition: an abundance of natural forage in the bear woods – an option other than bear baits.
As of Tuesday, bear hunters in northern Minnesota’s quota and no-quota zones, had killed about 1,690 black bears, according to Dan Stark, the Minnesota DNR’s large carnivore specialist in Grand Rapids. Stark said that was about 80% of the kill at this point a year ago.

Fall pier fishing: A simple approach that produces in a big way

Fall finds a lot of Michigan sportsmen in the woods or fields, but die-hard fishermen flock to Great Lakes piers.
A potpourri of species converge on the piers in the fall, and savvy anglers are there to intercept them. The species change with the season, but it’s an unending stream of opportunity until it becomes unsafe to fish. The species include Chinook, coho, steelhead, brown trout, lake trout, menominee, and whitefish. It’s also possible to tangle with the stray walleye, burbot, or yellow perch.

Ohio Insider: Where do things stand with deer disease in the state?

In a recent conversation I had with ODNR Division of Wildlife deer project administrator Mike Tonkovich, the deer doctor provided an update on where things stand with regard to deer disease in the state.
Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is typically more prevalent in the summer months, but as of late August when my talk with Tonkovich occurred Ohio had largely dodged the proverbial EHD bullet in 2023. Contrast that to 2022 when Ohio suffered a rather severe outbreak of EHD in late summer.
