Post-brain surgery, Minnesota’s Easton Fothergill wins collegiate bass tourney

Throughout his young fishing career, several unfortunate incidents have ruined Easton Fothergill’s chances at winning tournaments about which he felt confident.
Whether it was a mechanical issue or things he simply called “dumb stuff,” something always got in the way. In mid-August, the University of Montevallo (Alabama) junior and Grand Rapids, Minn., native thought he would be adding emergency brain surgery to the list of misfortunes that derailed his path to success.

Neighbors decry unpermitted ditch digging that altered wetland in southwestern Minnesota

Officials say a farmer in southwestern Minnesota’s Lyon County violated the state’s Wetland Conservation Act and public waters laws by excavating deeper than allowed in a ditch and a cattail slough, as well as interfering with Roggeman Marsh, a public water.
Jance Vandelanotte is the farmer who violated state rules, according to a Minnesota DNR voluntary restoration agreement provided to Outdoor News. Now, the farmer is on a voluntary restoration plan with the Lyon Soil and Water Conservation District and the DNR to restore the ditch, slough, and marsh.

Minnesota’s Pro Tip of the Week: Fall fishing offers fantastic bite

Fall is a fantastic time to troll on any of the rivers. The St. Croix and the Mississippi have hot bites going on No. 7 Shad Raps trolled near the bottom. Plus, the multi-species list of fish biting now includes sauger, white bass, channel cats, and flathead catfish.

Fish options aplenty, but popularity of Minnesota’s Johnson Lake is limited in Itasca County

Itasca County is loaded with a wide variety of fishing lakes – lakes large and small, lakes that seem to attract anglers for specific fish species, lakes well-known, lakes heavily pressured, and lakes well off the beaten path.
Then there’s a bunch of fisheries that don’t garner much attention – lakes that need to be approached with the mindset that you’re going to fish them and simply catch what they provide. One of those is Johnson Lake.

Minnesota’s 2023 pheasant hunt: Are hunters in for a big season?

Minnesota likely will never revisit the halcyon days of the 1940s and ’50s when upland hunters routinely harvested more than a million ring-necked pheasants. But on the eve of Saturday’s 2023 opener, state officials genuinely are optimistic about the upcoming season.
Buoyed by good to excellent spring nesting and brood-rearing conditions across parts of the state’s primary ringneck range, pheasant numbers statewide averaged a 10% increase from 2022, which is 26% above the 10-year average, according to the Minnesota DNR’s annual August roadside wildlife survey.

Outdoor Observations: It appears help is on the way for hunter education

I never thought I’d say this, but Michigan, particularly southern Michigan where I do most of my deer hunting, has too many deer.
Crop damage is up. Car/vehicle accidents are up. Deer sightings are up. This year on the bow opener I saw no fewer than 35 whitetails. I saw 12 during the morning hunt and lost count at 25 in the evening. That wasn’t an anomaly. Such sightings occur rather routinely.
