Post-brain surgery, Minnesota’s Easton Fothergill wins collegiate bass tourney

Throughout his young fishing career, several unfortunate incidents have ruined Easton Fothergill’s chances at winning tournaments about which he felt confident.
Whether it was a mechanical issue or things he simply called “dumb stuff,” something always got in the way. In mid-August, the University of Montevallo (Alabama) junior and Grand Rapids, Minn., native thought he would be adding emergency brain surgery to the list of misfortunes that derailed his path to success.

After brain surgery, Minnesota angler set for Bassmaster Tourney

Easton Fothergill, of Grand Rapids, Minn., an angler at Alabama’s University of Montevallo, has been medically cleared to participate in the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket presented by Lew’s at Milford Lake in Junction City, Kan., this weekend, after undergoing emergency surgery to remove a brain abscess in late August.
Fothergill said he’s relieved he’ll be able to compete after what he described as the scariest moments of his life.
“When this all happened, my first thought was, oh, my gosh, I put all this work in and finally made it to the bracket and I’m not going to be able to fish it,” Fothergill said.

Kyoya Fujita secures Bassmaster Elite tournament win on New York’s Lake Champlain

The big bites mostly eluded Kyoya Fujita, but the Bassmaster Elite rookie’s diligence delivered the coveted blue trophy, as the Japanese superstar amassed the winning total of 86 pounds, 12 ounces in the Dakota Lithium Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain in New York.
“This feels great!” Fujita said. “My dream (has been) to win an Elite Series tournament. My dream came true.”

Rookie pro, Joey Cifuentes, completes Bassmaster victory on Michigan’s Lake St. Clair

A sure sign Joey Cifuentes III was in line to win his second blue trophy came when a 5-pound smallmouth jumped into his boat midway through Championship Sunday, July 30, at the AFTCO Bassmaster Elite at Lake St. Clair.
That bass helped “the Cowboy” claim his second victory of his rookie season on the Elite Series with a four-day total of 91 pounds, 8 ounces, outlasting Oklahoma’s Luke Palmer by 1 pound, 2 ounces.
