Will bucks of summer stick around for fall? Georgia study examines age-old question

How well do late-summer trail camera photos predict the population of bucks in your hunting area come bow season?
That’s an age-old question for most early season archery hunters. It piqued the interest, too, of researchers at the University of Georgia (UGA), who undertook a big study recently to learn what they could about early season buck movement. Research has shown bucks shift home ranges and movement patterns for many reasons.

Here’s a modified approach to scouting fall turkeys

Sometime in the early 1990s, I attended a spring turkey hunter education clinic where I learned a number of cornerstones to success in the turkey woods. It shouldn’t be a surprise that scouting was chief among them.
We learned about gobbler droppings, wing-tip drag marks, and finding everything from feathers to scratching in the leaves. We were asked to go on a walk in the woods right before the hunting season itself, which generally involved finding (and spooking) the very birds we were trying to get the slip on. It wasn’t for many years that I learned how to apply an updated approach to scouting that informed without driving away turkeys I intended to hunt.

Outdoors comes to life through artists

As part of its “Arts in the Parks” program, the Ohio DNR and Ohio Arts Council premiered an exhibit of paintings by Tina Husted at Deer Creek State Park Lodge on Sept. 17. Husted is the wife of Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted.
Initiated in January 2023, “Arts in the Parks” aims to celebrate the state’s talented artists and combines the wonders of nature with a setting where they can best be enjoyed, according to Ohio DNR Director Mary Mertz.

Precision shooting: Handload for increased accuracy and lethality

For very good reason, ammunition assembled in a factory will never match the benchmark attainable for hunters who load cartridges by hand.
The primary goal of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute is to ensure that every firearm and round of ammunition is safe to use, and officials at the institute understand that machines cannot reliably drop an exact gunpowder charge into every case moving along an assembly line. Therefore, gunpowder charges may be low by several grains but never higher than the maximum allowable for the powder being used.
