Definitely will be feeling like fall the last half of this week instead of the middle-of-summer weather like we had earlier this week. The cooler weather will definitely drop water temps and help turn the bite back on.

The local DNR fisheries team ran a survey on Spooner Lake during the spring of 2022 – right at ice-out in April to capture early-spawning species, and then again in May to capture bass and panfish.
Spooner is a fertile and shallow lake. While it has a 17-foot maximum depth, most of the lake is shallow and weedy. The DNR lists an average depth of 7 feet for the lake.

Not that I needed more projects. Early September is a busy time at the little cabin. There is firewood to split, haul, and stack. Cover crops in the edges of our ag fields need to be planted. Deer stands need readying. Water tanks need constant attention due to the seemingly endless thirst of deer in the fall. Trail cameras need checking. Deer rifles need sighting in. The fall conservation meeting travel schedule is looming. The cabin itself needs a good fall cleaning. Dean Bortz waits for a column every two weeks. Why, oh why, then, did I latch onto the press release that came into my email from the Department of Natural Resources on Friday? I must be a glutton for punishment.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, who represents citizens in an area of northern Wisconsin containing the state’s largest wolf population, briefly attended a Sept. 23 Conservation Congress Wolf Committee meeting with an update on legislation that would remove wolves from federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.
The “Trust the Science Act”, HR-764, re-introduced by Tiffany and Rep. Lauren Boebert, (R-Colorado) cleared the House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources 21-16, and is supported by rest of Wisconsin’s Republican House delegation. According to Tiffany, the legislation is based on a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) 2020 decision that, after extensive study, wolves in the Upper Great Lakes should be delisted.
