Nature Smart: Unique characteristics of the American goldfinch

The vast majority of native bird nesting takes place in spring, right after trees green up and the flowers start to bloom. The spring nesting season feels like a frantic rush to quickly build a nest, lay, and incubate eggs and feed the chicks. Each bird species approaches nesting differently, but ultimately with the same goal in the end: successfully passing on their genes via fledging baby birds.
Some species, however, don’t follow the early nesting playbook. The American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) is a great example of this alternate nesting behavior.

Backyard and Beyond: Wildlife photos from the sweet season

Wayne Kober enjoyed a three-week fishing trip to Lake of the Woods, Ontario, in June – a trip enhanced by a surprise visit from a loon family. The water birds, two adults and two chicks, paddled out one day to swim alongside his small boat as he fished in a bay.

One smoothbore to rule them all: Five gun writers reveal their favorite shotgun

One of the best shots I’ve ever met uses one shotgun for everything. He does all his upland and waterfowl hunting with an old semi-auto, and it’s taken him to multiple berths on the all-state sporting clays team, too.
Not only does he own just the one gun, he neglects it almost criminally. One year he left it out by the side of his barn and didn’t find it until the snow melted in the spring. Clearly, you can do more than merely get by with a single shotgun, if you choose the right one. Recently I asked four gun writers what their choice would be if they were limited to one gun.

Kids learn trout fishing, habitat work at Wisconsin’s Trout Unlimited camp

Harlon Meade’s 16 birthdays belie the fact he’s already a seasoned trout fisherman.
The Antigo High School senior was one of about 20 kids at Trout Unlimited’s annual youth camp Aug. 17-20 in Waupaca and Waushara counties in Wisconsin. Linn Beck, president of TU’s Central Wisconsin Chapter, helped organize this year’s event at Pine Lake Camp near Waupaca.
