Long Island angler smashes New York thresher shark record with 707-pounder

On June 16, angler William Dittenhoefer, of Baldwin, N.Y., in Nassau County, was fishing from Capt. Michael Spagnuolo’s Freeport-based charter boat Gina Ann, when he fought and landed a 707-pound common thresher shark, which broke the New York State record for that species by nearly 100 pounds.
DEC officially accepted the new record on Aug. 11. A record thresher was certainly not the first thought in Dittenhoefer’s mind as the Gina Ann, a 38-foot down-easter built by Glenn Holland, of Maine, sailed out of Jones Inlet. The boat was participating in the Hooks for Heroes Shark Tournament, a charity event headquartered at Scotty’s Marina in Point Lookout.

A quick chat with hunting legend Larry Weishuhn

For decades, Texas native Larry Weishuhn has been a household name in the hunting community across many platforms.
For many years, it was his contributions to print media and television for the NRA and former North American Hunting Club, just to name a couple. These days, he can be found blogging, podcasting and continuing to write on a freelance basis while still making plenty of time for hunting.

Long Island state forest tract offers hunting access

Out on Long Island, hunting access is always a challenge, so it’s no surprise that the Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains Pine Barrens State Forest is a popular slice of state-owned land in New York.
And the Suffolk County parcel, 788 acres of unique habitat holding good numbers of deer, draws hunters who are more than willing to head afield under the restrictions and requirements needed to do so.

Endangered red wolves need space to stay wild, but humans stand in the way

Jeff Akin had to bite his tongue.
He was chatting with a neighbor about efforts to protect and grow the area’s red wolf population. The endangered wolves are equipped with bright orange radio collars to help locals distinguish the federally protected species from invasive, prolific coyotes.
“If I see one of those wolves with a collar on, I’m going to shoot it in the gut, so it runs off and dies,” Akin says the neighbor told him. “Because if it dies near you, and they come out and find the collar, they can arrest you.”
Akin is a hunter and the walls of his country house are lined with photos of the animals he’s killed. But what he heard made him sick.
