On June 16, angler William Dittenhoefer, of Baldwin, N.Y., in Nassau County, was fishing from Capt. Michael Spagnuolo’s Freeport-based charter boat Gina Ann, when he fought and landed a 707-pound common thresher shark, which broke the New York State record for that species by nearly 100 pounds.
DEC officially accepted the new record on Aug. 11. A record thresher was certainly not the first thought in Dittenhoefer’s mind as the Gina Ann, a 38-foot down-easter built by Glenn Holland, of Maine, sailed out of Jones Inlet. The boat was participating in the Hooks for Heroes Shark Tournament, a charity event headquartered at Scotty’s Marina in Point Lookout.
