Red Lake Nation voices concern as plan advances to reintroduce elk in northeast Minnesota

The Minnesota Legislature during its most recent session authorized $2.3 million in spending for the Minnesota DNR to work with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to capture elk from northwestern Minnesota and move them to the northeastern part of the state, largely on the Fond du Lac reservation. Now, discussion of action plans between the partners has begun, with a goal of transferring elk by the spring of 2026.
Red Lake Nation officials recently sent a letter to the DNR, stating opposition to the plan that would move elk from Red Lake reservation land and questioning the department’s lack of communication with Red Lake during the planning process.

Illinois DNR dinged in state audit for handling of artifacts

An agency with “hands in many pots,” the Illinois DNR not only maintains and manages hunting and fishing in the state, it also is in charge of state parks and regulates mines and minerals and oil and gas.
And then there are the historic sites and museums, an area that has put the agency in a rough spot with the Illinois Auditor General. According to the AG, an audit with an “adverse opinion” of DNR shows over three dozen findings, “including a lack of care for artifacts and problems with its service providers.”

Opponent of Illinois’ FOID law planning to appeal ruling

After an Illinois circuit court judge sided with the state that the Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card is constitutional, the plaintiff plans to appeal.
The FOID is required for residents – including hunters and trapshooters – to buy or possess firearms and ammunition. Illinois is one of four states that require a state-issued permit to buy or own a firearm and ammunition.

Numbers show fishing demographics are changing

The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation recently put out a special report for 2022 angling statistics, and the results were a little surprising. Since COVID restrictions kept everyone away from each other and preferably outside, 2020 was a record-breaking growth year for fishing as people had more time on their hands.
In 2022, it was still an improving year as 54.5 million Americans went fishing, an increase of 2.1 million from 2021. In that group, there were 4.1 million first-time participants, with 40% of them being women.
