DNR studying similarities between paddlefish, carp in the Minnesota River

Though one is native and other invasive, paddlefish and silver (Asian) carp have similar characteristics regarding behavior and movement, says Kayla Stampfle, Minnesota DNR invasive carp specialist.
Because of those similarities, the DNR is conducting research on both fish and their relationship in the Minnesota River. That research continued last week. Stampfle was researching carp as part of continued to efforts to study more the invasives. Tony Sindt, DNR Minnesota River specialist, was focused on putting transmitters into paddlefish to continue tracking and learning more about these natives.

A past and present look into Michigan’s sturgeon fishery

Historically, Michigan’s Great Lakes and connected waterways had strong populations of lake sturgeon.
The Michigan DNR Fisheries Centennial report states that it cannot be determined how abundant sturgeon were in lakes Michigan, Superior, and Huron before commercial fishing started in earnest in the 1830s.
“Millions of pounds of sturgeon were taken in nets for many years,” the report states.

Wisconsin’s 2023 deer hunts set; Iron County is bucks only

The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) adopted final regulations for the 2023 deer season following an extended discussion over a difference between recommendations by the DNR and Marathon County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC).
The Marathon CDAC reduced the private land bonus antlerless permit level from last year’s 2,000 to 1,800 this fall. The DNR recommended to the NRB keeping the county’s bonus permit level at 2,000.

Turkey programs making progress in Illinois in attempt to address population declines

After a spring season described as a “bounce-back” of sorts, Illinois turkey hunters have been treated to a couple more pieces of good news.
DNR has followed through on its promise to modernized its turkey monitoring system and the National Wild Turkey Federation has taken steps to address wild turkey population declines. NWTF’s new “Habitat for the Hatch” initiative only brushes the bottom of Illinois, but it is designed to reverse the turkey population skid and improve overall nesting habitat conditions across 18 states.

Rimfire groundhogs: Get in on this overlooked action of summer

There was a time when hunting groundhogs was a very active part of the summertime for hunters. Not so these days, as it is often hard to see any hunters out in the heat.
This could be due to the change in groundhog habits. Many times the reasoning or shooting groundhogs was to get them out of the fields where their burrows posed risk to farmer and livestock, but today it is hard to find a groundhog burrow in a field.
