A federal judge in South Dakota has sentenced a Montana man to three years in prison for trafficking eagle feathers, wings and tails.
Harvey Hugs, 59, of Hardin, Mont., was sentenced in late June in Rapid City. He was found guilty in February of three counts of violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, the Rapid City Journal reported.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday, June 27, announced a significant investment to expand its work on wildlife conservation.
According to an agency press release, the USDA will invest $500 million over the next five years and leverage all available conservation programs through its Working Lands for Wildlife effort. The $500 million will be shared across the United States and help boost various wildlife populations.

The Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Alliance’s remaining board members voted Tuesday, June 27, to formally dissolve the nearly 30-year-old organization.
An umbrella group that represented dozens of state outdoors and conservation groups on statewide public policy matters since its founding in 1994, MOHA led the charge in passing Amendment 2, the so-called Right to Hunt and Fish ballot initiative in 1998. It also played a key role in passing the Legacy Amendment sales tax dedication a decade later.
As July arrives, fishing strategies change as the water warms and, more importantly, young-of-the-year minnow hatches have begun. Insect hatches also are becoming more common, giving game fish more feeding opportunities than at any other time of the season.

An invasive fish that’s a voracious predator capable of surviving out of water for days was recently caught in southeastern Missouri, causing worry that the hard-to-contain species will spread and become a problem.
It’s long been believed that congregated deer can be a vector for chronic wasting disease, and the Minnesota DNR has enacted several measures to reduce that scenario in recent years. While baiting deer for the purpose of hunting has long been illegal in the Gopher State, the ban on that practice has been extended to recreational feeding as well.
