Weather model forecasts bump in Iowa pheasant population

Favorable winter and spring weather across much of Iowa is expected to benefit pheasant hunters this fall.

Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife research biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said each summer, the DNR uses a model based on winter and spring weather conditions, previous weather data and more than 50 years of pheasant roadside population surveys to predict pheasant population trends for the fall.

Minnesota’s youth trap shooters shine at huge 9-day championship in Alexandria

Cole Krueger shot a career-best score at the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League’s trap shooting championship in Alexandria on June 20. While he certainly was proud of that, there was a tiny bit of “what if” lingering in the back of his mind when the day was done.
Krueger had just wrapped up his junior year at Prior Lake High School. He busted 99 out of a possible 100 clays on a hot and windy day.
“I like it because it’s my highest score, but I knew exactly what happened when I missed that one shot,” Krueger said. “The wind just pushed it a certain way where it bounced up right when I pulled the trigger.”

Combo trips a hit on Michigan’s Saginaw Bay

So is Saginaw Bay a better walleye fishery or bass fishery?
The walleye guys will tell you it’s no contest. But so will the bass guys. Back in May I set up a day with veteran Saginaw Bay fishing guide Bill Horton to go bass fishing. I brought one of my brothers with me, and when we showed up in the morning, Horton suggested we go out and catch a bunch of walleyes first, then go bass fishing.

After tough winter, Minnesota pheasants get a decent spring

Every day he runs his route in southwestern Minnesota, mail carrier Rick Buchholz traverses roughly 80 miles of gravel roads – prime real estate to spy pheasants and newly hatched pheasant chicks.
“It’s getting to be that time of year,” the 56-year-old outdoorsman from Westbrook said recently. “I’ve seen a lot of roosters this spring, but very few hens and no little ones at all. I suspect they’ll start showing up real soon.”
In fact, some broods have started to show up across Minnesota’s pheasant belt, roughly a week later than normal, due to protracted winter weather.

Targeting ‘junk fish’ can be an entertaining diversion

The ripple at the tail end of the pool was being made at regular intervals as the fish fed during the evening fly hatch. Carefully as I could, I eased into position from above, then made the long cast to put my fly in the perfect position.
It worked! The fish slurped in the fly and I set the hook. The fight was memorable to say the least as the fished used the current in the best manner possible to try and get away.
