Open-water fishing off to fine start in Minnesota

A month has passed since the 2023 open-water fishing season officially started. There wasn’t much happening prior to opener on Saturday, May 13 thanks to lagging ice on many state lakes.
Anglers eager to dust off their long rods and chase panfish in the weeks prior to opening day had few options. But the weather changed fast, and when it did, fishing picked up.

Minnesota research shows wolves have fishing honey holes, too

Wildlife biologists have long known that wolves are opportunistic feeders that will take advantage of a host of diet items available to them, but until recently it was not exactly known how often wolves in places like northern Minnesota were targeting freshwater fish.
Researchers from the Voyageurs Wolf Project, a University of Minnesota research project in collaboration with the National Park Service, shed some light on the subject.

Retrievers Unlimited HRC in Illinois celebrates 35th anniversary

The day dawned with perfect southern Illinois weather when retriever enthusiasts from across the Midwest and South arrived at Peabody River State Fish and Wildlife Area in New Athens for the unique Retrievers Unlimited, HRC 35th Anniversary Spring Test.
As the dogs and handlers poured into hunt test headquarters early on a Saturday morning, it was a time filled with warm hugs and extended “hellos,” as many older and retired retriever handlers arrived to help celebrate the anniversary event.

Off turkeys, and onto New York’s Oneida Lake for great angling action

Just five days into New York state’s spring gobbler season, I took the unheard of leap – actually just a small step – into Mike Cusano’s bass boat for a day of fishing on Oneida Lake.
My turkey-hunting friends were incredulous. In past years I’ve dismissed potential trips out to Lake Erie’s smallmouth factory and the prospect of 5-pound bronzebacks (and maybe even larger) in favor of my gobbler obsession.

Herding a hen and her ducklings safely to water

I’ve always encouraged my readers and listeners to follow the advice of our wildlife biologists. April through early June are the times that wildlife babies begin to show up. Each year I re-preach what the DNR says: “Leave wildlife babies where they belong – in the wild.”
In one rare case recently, I changed my tune just a bit and gave a hen mallard and her 11 ducklings a guided trip to the water on East Okoboji.
