Wisconsin hunter bags 8-bearded Buffalo County gobbler

Thanks to advice from his 8-year-old son, Keith Braunreiter, of the town of Gale in Trempealeau County, shot an eight-bearded gobbler – the bird of a lifetime – April 26 in Buffalo County.
Braunreiter, 52, has been hunting turkeys for 34 years. He figures he has shot more than 100 turkeys in that time, and only one had a double beard. For the last 20 years, he has started his turkey season on a farm in Buffalo County – an hour drive from his home.

19 disabled hunters partake in Ohio’s Blue Rock turkey hunt

The Y-Bridge Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) partnered with the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife and the ODNR Division of Forestry to sponsor the 16th annual Gary Finnicum Memorial Turkey Hunt on March 31, April 1, and April 2 at Blue Rock State Forest.
The Wheelin’ Sportsmen event allowed 19 disabled hunters the opportunity to participate in a spring turkey hunt with 58 guides, who volunteered their time to scout for turkeys, set up blinds and adaptive equipment, and donate the use of their UTVs to provide transportation to and from their hunting sites.

It’s ‘game on’ for Saginaw Bay walleyes in Michigan

“June on Saginaw Bay will be game on,” a walleye fan proclaimed online in early May, and the prospect made me smile.
As the weather and the water warm and the days stretch to their longest daylight spans, the Bay’s open-water fishing can be expected to get better and better.
What I really love is the first high-SPF-sunscreen trolling days on the Bay, when a jacket feels good in the morning, the afternoon begs for a cold beverage, and walleyes await your choice of methods.

Robbing the bank: Fly fishermen shouldn’t always cast midstream

Historically, some of our country’s most notorious criminals robbed banks. Names like Jesse James and John Dillinger come to mind. These criminals came to bad ends.
Like them, I enjoy robbing banks; but I am not a criminal, and I hope not to come to a bad end. The banks I rob are not money depositories; the ones I rob are creek and river banks.

Big archery event coming back to Ohio’s Putnam County June 23-25

The R100 National Archery Tour is returning to Ohio following a three-year hiatus.
This year’s event is set for the weekend of June 23-25 at the Leipsic Fishing And Hunting Club, which is located at 10605 Road H in the Village of Ottawa.
The tour is sponsored by Rinehart Targets, the world’s largest manufacturer of 3-D archery targets. The COVID-19 pandemic and other concerns has kept the tour out of Ohio since 2019.
