Lake sturgeon eggs from Minnesota’s Rainy River key to restoration success in Red River Basin

The Minnesota DNR, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Red Lake Nation, and White Earth Nation recently completed a lake sturgeon egg-take operation along the Rainy River in Minnesota. In previous years, lake sturgeon eggs were sourced through Rainy River First Nations in Ontario, Canada.
The sturgeon eggs are now at the USFWS National Fish hatcheries in Genoa, Wis., and Valley City, N.D., where they will be reared to fingerling size to support DNR and tribal stocking efforts in lakes and rivers throughout the Red River Basin in northwestern Minnesota.

Minnesota’s Andy Grell earns All-State clay target league honors in four disciplines

Andy Grell doesn’t just have a passion for shooting. It’s his life. During the past couple of years, the high school student has dedicated his time and energy to the sport of shooting, and it’s paid off. Grell this year became the first athlete to earn All-State honors in Minnesota for trap, sporting clays, skeet, and 5-stand in one year. He’s ranked No. 1 in the state in skeet, sporting clays, and 5-stand and is ranked 27th in trap.

Mentor Lagoons in Ohio adds fuel docks in harbor

The work on installing a pair of 3,000-gallon above-ground steel fuel tanks and respective fueling pumps was nearly complete at the time of this writing. And while not finished for the Memorial Day holiday, they almost certainly will be discharging fuel by the Fourth of July holiday to the hundreds of boats that use the Mentor Lagoons on a weekly basis.

Quality angling, on the fly: Catch-and-release trout fisheries have their place

I adhere to different degrees of catch and release in different angling contexts.
For myself, catch and release is always, universally, appropriate with native trout in ours and neighboring states. These, after all, are brook trout, and though they’ve shown amazing resilience to be here at all, they are confined to shreds of their original range, and merit release after capture and careful handling.
