Illinois DNR confirms new state record bowfishing freshwater drum

A 20.25-pound freshwater drum arrowed by an archer at Lake Sangchris this winter has been confirmed by DNR as a new bowfishing state record in Illinois.
Phillip Albert took the fish on Feb 20 at the Christian County lake, which produced the state record hook and line flathead catfish (81.45 pounds) back in 2015. For bowfishers, this is the first state record to come out of Sangchris.

Minnesota turkeys bucking trend of nationally declining numbers?

There are parts of the country where wildlife managers are working to reverse a trend of declining wild turkey numbers, but Minnesota’s turkey population appears to be bucking that trend, at least in many regions, as hunters head afield during this year’s spring season.
That’s according to the tools DNR wildlife managers currently have at their disposal to measure turkey numbers in the state.

Springtime is the right time for sunfish

Spring is a consistent time to find bluegills and other sunfish. No need for a fishing forecast when they gather in the shallows to spawn. The pre-spawn catch can be as good as those taken during the spawn. Both events become excellent opportunities for finding the largest bluegills within casting distance of shore or from a small boat.

Three hot hatches in Pennsylvania: These are the bugs to watch for in early May for trout anglers

Arriving at the stream, I take a moment to observe what’s going on. First I look for obvious rises, either those soft concentric circles that appear when a fish has daintily taken a bug on or near the surface, or a splashy chaotic eruption, which means something else entirely.

Illinois spring fish surveys: DNR sampling results for crappies, muskies, and more

A flurry of Facebook posts by DNR’s Division of Fisheries summarizing spring sampling activities at lakes around Illinois has anglers dusting off tackle boxes, respooling reels and gassing up boats. Fox Chain O Lakes, Siloam Springs Lake, Heidecke Lake, Carlyle Lake and Pittsfield Lake have been in the proverbial spotlight.

Last year, the Mohawk Valley school district became the first in New York state to join a growing national organization known as the Student Air Rifle Program.
Elizabeth Handy, 18, was quick to sign up for that team, but little did she know that in Mohawk Valley’s first year of competition, she would become national champion.
