Northeast Minnesota brook trout: Water high, fast early, but area offers great opportunity

The trout-fishing season kicked off April 15 for inland streams in Minnesota. With snow and ice melting in the northeast, there’s anticipation of high water and tough fishing conditions currently, but the North Shore offers a destination to catch quality trout. In addition to steelhead opportunities, the region contains ample brook trout and often has lesser fishing pressure compared to some parts of southeastern Minnesota.

The ultimate trout adventure: Backwoods brookies

I got into backwoods trout fishing after reading an article in a national outdoors magazine about a couple of state biologists who hiked into a remote pond in what is now the Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area. The author told of map-and-compass bushwhacking adventures and encounters with beavers, bears and large brook trout.
One of the story’s photos showed a trout too big to fit in a large frying pan. That was challenge enough for me.

Reader Story: Memories of smelt hunting in Wisconsin’s Frog Bay

Every April it was the same thing. “You should come on up with us smelt hunting,” the guys would say. “It’s a good time.”
“I’ll think about,” I said those first couple of years when I got a teaching job in Prentice. I always had things to do and didn’t have a lot of time. Finally, in 2002, I joined the smelting crew, as we called it, and headed up Hwy. 13 to Frog Bay near Bayfield to partake in the yearly tradition known as “smelting.”
After that first year, I was hooked, or netted, I suppose.
