Research shows many Illinois deer are exposed to EHD, but not all die

It was the height of summer 2022 when the calls started coming in. Scores of dead deer suddenly littered rural properties and park preserves in Illinois, alarming the public and inconveniencing landowners.
According to officials at the Urbana Park District, it was Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), a midge-borne viral illness that pops up in deer populations around the state every few years.
But now University of Illinois scientists have found gene variants in deer associated with the animals’ susceptibility to EHD.

Lake Erie walleye, perch numbers remain high with big expectations for 2023 anglers

Walleye and perch fishing on Lake Erie should continue to be outstanding this summer and fall, according to new DNR data.
No size or bag limit changes are expected for Michigan waters of Lake Erie from the Lake Erie Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, which is meeting soon. The committee consists of senior fisheries staff members from the Michigan DNR, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Turkey timing: Early seasons are filled with challenges, opportunities

At the hunting season’s start, wild turkeys are doing about the same thing no matter the weather in Minnesota: roosting, surviving, eating, breeding. Photoperiod (daylight length) drives the mating urge in male birds, and photoperiod doesn’t change. I’ve shot turkeys during storms that piled more snow on top of the 18 inches already on the ground.
If you plan on hunting seasons A or B in April, here are a few strategies for approaching the hunt, and tips to employ.

Take a kid into the turkey woods this spring and get the most out of the hunt

Some of my most memorable spring gobbler hunts occurred when I didn’t even have a shotgun in my hands. There’s no better feeling than taking a youngster or a non-hunting adult afield and introducing them to our obsession. And if they’re fortunate enough to harvest a bird, it’s even better. Too, watching the hunt through their eyes may even re-energize your passion for spring gobbler hunting.

Turning decoys into works of art

Bill Koelpin, Jr., didn’t have to look hard to find a little artistic inspiration. All he had to do was ask his father, Bill Sr.
“My father was a world-champion carver, painter, and bronze sculptor,” Koelpin said while standing next to his artwork at the Wisconsin Decoy and Sporting Collectibles Show, held March 10-11 in Oshkosh. “He started as a duck carver, then he went into painting, and he’s well-known for his prints.”
