Iowa DNR looking for volunteers to help with frog and toad survey

Iowans who are graduates of “frog and toad school” have collected data on more than 2,200 wetlands since 1991, providing an incredible record of activity. The goal for this year’s graduates is to add to that legacy.
The Iowa DNR needs volunteers in northeast and northwest Iowa. There are two in-person courses scheduled for April with seats available.

Commentary: The real truth of Wisconsin’s Pelican River Forest easement plan

Would you like to gain access to thousands of acres of northern Wisconsin land for hunting and other outdoor recreation? We now have a once-in-a-life-time chance to gain public road access to a big chunk of industrial/investment forest land that has been gated for years. For that to happen though, we need to urge the politicians in Madison to act now by purchasing a conservation easement.

Iowa DNR reports good turkey production last year with 2023 season opening April 7 for youth hunters

Iowa turkeys had good production last year across most of the state, led by the central and east central regions.
Iowa’s spring turkey hunting begins April 7 with a youth only season, followed by four shorter individual gun/bow seasons. One longer archery-only season runs from April 10-May 14.

Minnesota DNR-contracted commercial fishers capture 30 invasive carp in Pool 6 of the Mississippi River

A commercial fishing business contracted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources captured 30 invasive carp Monday in Pool 6 of the Mississippi River, near Winona. While invasive carp have been previously captured in Pool 6 and upstream as far as the Twin Cities metro, this is the largest number captured at one time this far upstream.
The DNR is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and other partners to respond to this capture, which consisted primarily of silver carp.

Details from North Dakota on spring snow goose season

Before the snow geese arrive, Canada geese lead the way. Non-hunters may wonder why the spring conservation season is open so early. Fair question.
The purpose is to reduce light goose (snow goose) populations during spring as the birds migrate north to their nesting grounds. Seldom is the spring migration pushing birds into North Dakota much before mid-March, but we live in a region of extremes.

Commentary: Memories of Bud Grant as a friend of wildlife and a conservationist

It was January 1985 when my wife, Ethelle, and I stopped at the parking lot of the Bramadero Restaurant in Liberia, Costa Rica. We had spent the day birding at the Palo Verde National Wildlife Refuge. As we got out of our vehicle, we were delighted to encounter another party of Minnesota travelers, including Bud Grant.
