Independence has a storied reputation for not just producing good numbers of muskies, but also trophy-caliber fish.

Fishing reports have been light and we’re down to just the hardcore walleye and muskie anglers at this point, although those venturing out are doing well.

The anglers who continue to fish are doing well, with walleyes, crappies, and muskies providing quality fish-catching opportunities statewide.

If we find fish tight in an area, then we can focus there, and fish a jig and minnow, but this allows us to cover a lot of ground.

It’s a bluegill and crappie fishery first, known for producing quality panfish within its abundance of healthy habitat in the way of vegetation to support them.

Its iconic lake trout population, an abundance of walleyes and smallmouth bass, and its northern pike – which includes the rare silver-phase pike – make it a destination lake in these parts.
