Starvation Lake, Kalkaska County
Starvation Lake has a deep history of fishery management.

Starvation Lake has a deep history of fishery management.

In particular, fishermen who like to target panfish in spring will find this lake a really nice alternative.

The primary species sought by anglers here is largemouth bass. You’ll find plenty of fish, though they run rather small.

While the lake has a 14-inch size limit and a five-fish daily bag limit, local fishermen release most of their fish in an effort to keep size and numbers above average for the area.

Although the lake is just 575 acres in size, anglers throughout central Minnesota are aware of its ability to produce walleyes and crappies year after year.

Pre-spawn is a great time to be fishing, for any species, especially crappies.

It’s connected and managed as one water body since water, boats, and fish can freely move between the lakes.

The good news is that anyone who would like to do some kind of fishing will find something to suit their interests throughout the state.

Rising water temperatures have stoked the crappie bite.
