Walleye fishing can be very good on the impressive water body, but anglers also catch northern pike, bass, and muskies, along with some nice yellow perch, too.

The DNR has been stocking splake in Thumb since 1976. During the past five years the state has stocked over 73,000 splake in Thumb, including 23,000 that measured between 7.8 and 7.95 inches last year,

Like most impoundments, Lake Besser features a mixed bag of game fish including both predators and panfish, along with an abundance of rough fish.

Eighteen different species and a total of 744 fish were collected during the most recent survey of the fishery.

The lake features robust populations of walleyes, bass, pike, and panfish and also has a fair number of cisco, and a few remnant lake trout.

Black crappie was the top game fish by number found in the DNR survey.
