Southeast Minnesota streams get a flushing; outlook is good

Despite the past week’s rainstorms that swelled and muddied rivers and streams and rendered them temporarily unfishable, stream-trout fishing across Minnesota has been good so far this year entering the July 4th holiday weekend, state officials and guides say.
Minnesota contains hundreds of miles of managed trout streams and a variety of scenic terrain where they can be found – from the North Shore of Lake Superior to the Driftless Area of the southeast.

Minnesota conservation groups seeking improved feedlot rules with water quality, fish habitat at stake

State conservation and environmental groups, including Minnesota Trout Unlimited, the Izaak Walton League, and the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, are urging the public to comment on new state feedlot rulemaking that could overhaul how livestock manure is stored and spread on Minnesota agricultural lands.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is collecting public input to update the state’s feedlot rules for the first time in 25 years.

Minnesota DNR mulls turkey zone changes to obtain better population information

If you’re basing your outlook strictly on harvest, the last two spring turkey-hunting seasons in Minnesota have been the best in recorded history. In 2024 and 2025, spring hunters bagged 16,714 and 16,918 turkeys, respectively.
“I would argue that the last two springs are the two best seasons we’ve had since the season opened in Minnesota for wild turkeys in 1978,” said Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR acting resident game bird consultant.

Minnesota DNR completes spring waterfowl survey amid tough conditions

When Minnesota DNR officials fly the annual spring waterfowl breeding population survey – one of the state’s longest-running wildlife inventories – it rarely goes off without a hitch.
This spring was no different.
“We had a little turbulence, you could say, but we finally got it finished,” said Bruce Davis, supervisor for the Minnesota DNR’s Wetland Wildlife Populations and Research Group in Bemidji, who flew this year’s survey.

Deer kill reduced in 2025 without southeast Minnesota culling

In the ongoing effort to thwart the spread of chronic wasting disease in the state, Minnesota DNR-contracted federal sharpshooters “culled” 201 white-tailed deer in three locations this past winter, with one testing positive – that one in the Grand Rapids area.
Patrick Hagen, Minnesota DNR disease response coordinator, said “targeted culling” is a widely used management practice designed to slow the spread of CWD where it is known to exist.

DNR has cormorant plan in place for Pelican Lake, an important walleye fishery in western Minnesota

The Minnesota DNR has developed and implemented an adaptive monitoring and management plan for cormorants on Pelican Lake in Grant County – one of the area’s most popular walleye fisheries.
The plan’s goal is to safeguard the walleye fishery while keeping close tabs on the lake’s cormorant colony, its population, and how it interacts with the lake’s walleye population. Cormorants are known fish predators.

Game birds entering critical period when weather, habitat conditions dictate future hunter success

As a dyed-in-the-wool pheasant, ruffed grouse, and quail hunter, Bob St. Pierre admits he pretty much has “bird on the brain” year-round.
As are other serious bird hunters, St. Pierre constantly monitors the weather and thinks about the welfare of the species he loves. That’s especially true during the winter and the current window of time that biologists call the spring nesting and summer brood-rearing season.

Importance of CRP ‘can’t be overstated’ as Feds offer new signup opportunity

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency recently announced a new general and continuous sign-up period for the Conservation Reserve Program running through June 6.

“With 1.8 million acres available for all CRP enrollment this fiscal year, we are very aware that we are bumping up against the statutory 27-million-acre statutory cap,” said Bill Beam, of the Farm Service Agency. “Now more than ever, it’s important that the acres offered by landowners and those approved by USDA address our most critical natural resource concerns.”
