Outdoor Insights: Lead ammo, tackle debate rages on at Minnesota, federal level

The Minnesota and federal governments are debating lead ammo and fishing tackle again.
Where population-level effects exist for a species, I believe lead bans are fair game. The feds made the right decision banning lead for waterfowl hunting decades ago. But should that argument extend to eagles?

Outdoor Insights: Proposal to lower Minnesota walleye limit will see administrative law judge hearing

The public comment period on the Minnesota DNR Fisheries’ proposal to reduce the statewide walleye bag limit from 6 to 4 ended on March 5, and by late last week, the agency had tallied nearly 1,500 total comments.

Outdoor Insights: Wild deer for sale? Idea still deserves a hard pass

A buddy sent me a link to a story that appeared in The Atlantic Monthly back in January.
Titled “Eat More Deer – America is letting good meat go to waste,” the piece advocated for allowing Americans to sell venison taken via legal hunting. As many readers know, the federal Lacey Act prohibited the commercial sale of wild game meat way back in 1900.

Outdoor Insights: Proof that your voice matters when it comes to protecting public lands

At Pheasant Fest last Saturday at the Minneapolis Convention Center, I monitored a seminar: “America’s Public Lands: Action, Advocacy and the Path Ahead.”
The session spent a solid chunk of time commending the nation’s sportsmen and sportswomen for halting congressional language last year that would have liquidated 3 million acres of federal public lands. Though I bore quickly with congratulatory conversations, there’s something to be said for pausing and celebrating conservation wins.

New assistant commissioner joins Minnesota DNR leadership

The Minnesota DNR has a new assistant commissioner as the current administration tackles its final year in charge of the 3,000-person agency.
Katie Smith, director of DNR’s ecological services division since 2021, moved up earlier this month to the commissioner’s office at 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul to serve as one of three assistant commissioners. She replaces Shannon Lotthammer, who retired from the DNR on Feb. 2.

Outdoor Insights: What’s behind the disappearance of Minnesota’s jackrabbits?

With Pheasant Fest this weekend in Minneapolis, everyone’s talking upland game.
When the annual August roadside report arrives from the Minnesota DNR, every upland bird hunters pores over the data, mostly focusing on ring-necked pheasants, which showed solid numbers going into autumn 2025. But there are other critters in the report, including gray partridge, mourning doves, cottontail rabbits, and – arguably the saddest story year after year – the white-tailed jackrabbit.
