Camera study sheds light on how bucks shift from summer to fall

A month or so out from a new deer season, we’re learning something new – or maybe not so new – about scouting bucks on late-summer trail cameras.
What you see now is not necessarily what you can expect later. That’s not exactly shocking news, but deer biologists in a university study did have an interesting assessment of camera scouting right before a deer season begins. The Illinois archery season, which launches Oct. 1, will go on with camera research or without it. Hunters who have put in the time and work to select a treestand site are eager to assess their own research and decision making.

A quick chat with Kevin Irons, long-time enemy of invasive carp

Kevin Irons’ introduction to invasive carp came in a peculiar but fitting way. In the 1990s, when Irons worked as a large river ecologist for the Illinois Natural History Survey, an angler carried a curious-looking bighead carp into Irons’ office at the Illinois River Biological Station. The bearer of the fish had a simple question that went something like, “What the heck is this?”
Irons knew the answer. And he knew the battle was beginning.

Seven charged in Illinois turkey poaching case

Details of the turkey poaching case in Madison County that involved AR-style rifles equipped with thermal imaging scopes and suppressors were released by DNR.
The agency reports that the 20 turkeys taken illegally were taken by out-of-state hunters in the Alton-Wood River area in Madison County. DNR’s Office of Law Enforcement initiated an investigation in March 2022 after dead turkeys were found on an unnamed number of properties.

Sampling of Illinois’ Ramsey Lake points to ‘big’ potential

Illinois DNR biologists are expecting big things at Ramsey Lake in coming years – big bass, to be specific.
“The 2021 and 2022 surveys both collected many bass in the 9- to 14-inch range and the size structure of the bass population could improve in the coming years if these smaller fish in the continue to grow,” a report following the 2022 survey noted.

Dedicated core of squirrel hunters greeted with ideal conditions for Illinois opener

As squirrel hunting openers go, the surprise this year was the lack of discomfort Lance Poole felt as he plopped his behind on a moss-covered stump in the bottoms of Monroe County, Ill., on Aug. 1.
It took exactly 11 minutes of sitting perfectly still before Poole heard some rapid rustling in a treetop not 30 yards to his east. His reaction: Identify. Point. Aim. Bang.
