Loons add to angling outings, but why are they drawn to us?

You’d think a creature as regal as the common loon would have the instincts and intelligence to follow boats other than mine when seeking easy meals of dead baitfish or something I throw back.
First, I lack the skills to catch lots of fish. Second, I’m not inclined to throw anything back. Then again, whether loons flank my boat like pilot fish on sharks or bob astern like sea gulls in a ship’s wake, they eventually realize their error. One minute they’re so close I see the reds of their eyes, but then they dive into the depths and resurface so distant I see only their silhouettes.

Venerable Mitchell 300s take anglers back in time

I swelled with pride, even though I had just turned 40 at that time. If old guys were still using reels they bought as young men or teenagers, my Mitchell reels should last till I’m 64, too.

Wisconsin’s Turtle-Flambeau Flowage proves we can do great things with nonpartisan politics

When Mercer-area friends, family, and fishing guides advise visitors to “fish the wood” on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage (TFF), they really aren’t being specific about where best to try your luck. When it comes to submerged wood on the TFF, your anchors and fishing hooks are seldom far from snags. For example, when fishing just a fraction of this Iron County paradise for perch, crappies, walleyes, bluegills, muskies, and smallmouth bass Aug. 5-8 with my wife, we accomplished a feat I never intended.

Stories from Ron Leys, longtime outdoor editor, teach lifelong lessons

Ron Leys retired over three decades ago as the Milwaukee Journal’s outdoors editor, roughly four years before Wisconsin’s largest newspaper merged with the company’s morning paper in 1995 to become the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Leys, 86, long ago quit writing stories, but still tells them while fishing with friends on the Mississippi River’s backwaters near his home in Prairie du Chien. Better yet, he still tells the stories within each story.

Even smart people fall for turkey myths

I’ve long wondered why people have so many odd beliefs about turkeys. Myths about them are nearly as stubborn and pervasive as those about whitetails. Prof. Mike Chamberlain, at the University of Georgia, addressed this topic recently in his popular weekly column “Turkey Tuesday” on Instagram.
Chamberlain noted, for example, that even John James Audubon – yes, that Audubon – used to believe gobblers are so logical, cunning, and plotting that they trampled nests and eggs to force hens to resume mating.

Here’s how to be in the best shape possible this hunting season

Hunters should take a cue from runners to ensure they go into autumn with strong, flexible joints for all the walking, stalking, and deer dragging that hunting demands.
What do runners know that most hunters don’t? In short, it all starts with the butt. If you want healthy hips, knees, ankles, and feet, you must have strong glutes.

The reasons why the Wisconsin DNR killed the ‘Hunt Wild WI’ mobile app

Barring mass outrage by users of the DNR’s mobile app, Wisconsin hunters will never again tap the “Hunt Wild WI” icon on their tablet or smartphone to register deer or remind themselves when legal hunting hours end.
The popular app “retired” June 29, the DNR announced. Just to verify the claim, I tapped the app’s button on my iPhone on June 30. Sure enough, the DNR’s retirement announcement filled the screen, telling me the agency no longer supports the “Hunt Wild Mobile Application.”

Rock bass: big hitters, weak fighters, good eaters

Rock bass smash any bait tossed in front of them, but fight with all the ferocity of paper towels once hooked.
Still, one must admire this low-profile member of the sunfish family because it strikes when all other fish refuse all offerings. If you’re lucky enough to land a meal of rock bass, don’t go looking for something to fret about. Simply look forward to some fine dining.

Lake Superior’s swollen tributaries fuel steelhead passion

When someone teaches you how to fish their favorite Lake Superior steelhead river, you’re obligated to learn how precisely you may identify the place to friends.
Calvin McShane didn’t hesitate when asked.
“Just say we’re in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,” he said.
Can I be more specific?
“We’re 50 miles from the nearest Walmart, just upriver from where I married my wife,” he said.
