Brotherly love: 12-year-old Ohio hunter gets big buck the siblings were after on public land

What is perhaps more rewarding than harvesting the buck of your dreams is seeing a close brother do the same.
Alex Gingerich, 19, found this out close-hand during the recently completed deer season when his 12-year-old brother, Glendon, did just that, on public land to boot.

Difficult to access, but Wills Creek Lake in Ohio is worth the effort

While it may make a lake tougher to fish, sometimes limited boat access can be a good thing.
Consider the case of Wills Creek Lake in Muskingum and Coshocton counties. DNR Division of Wildlife fisheries biologists owe the lake’s decent largemouth numbers in part to limited access and an underfished population.

Ohio Insider: Would you take part in an antlerless-only hunt during a deer season?

We covered a lot of ground in rounding up the numbers on the recently completed 2023-2024 deer season in the last edition of Ohio Outdoor News.
But, there was one item left over from that discussion that I wanted to delve into a bit further. That being the notion that the state, in order to reach its antlerless deer take goal, needs to implement some type of antlerless-only season within the overall season.

What started as the fleeting thought of a college student ended up taking Brandon Weis more than 8,000 miles across the country on the hike of a lifetime.
The adventure required Weis to through hike the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Arizona Trail, all in a calendar year. The 2021 odyssey is all spelled out in Weis’ new book, This Is Gonna Hurt, which the Ottawa, Ohio, native recently self-published.

Nettle in top five of bass lakes in northwest Ohio

It’s a little off the beaten path way up in the far reaches of northwest Ohio, but Nettle Lake just might be worth the trip if you’re looking for a lunker bass or two.
This little lake covers only 115 acres, but for what it lacks in size it makes up for in its population of largemouth bass, said Mike Wilkerson, fish management supervisor for the ODNR Division of Wildlife in the region.

Ohio Insider: Conducting a deer season autopsy

We wrapped up the 2023-24 deer season in early February and, as is typical, I phoned Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife Deer Management Administrator Mike Tonkovich for a summation of the season.
The season was an overwhelming success in terms of sheer numbers – 213,928 deer harvested and the second most bucks killed in any one season to date. That’s an estimated 12 million pounds of venison, according to the Division of Wildlife.

Ohio hunters fall short of Division of Wildlife’s harvest ‘doe goal’

Ohio hunters during the just completed 2023-2024 deer hunting season harvested 213,928 whitetails.
Yet, the ODNR Division of Wildlife says the deer herd in the state is as large as its ever been in the state’s documented history. Why the seeming dichotomy? Supply and demand in its simplest terms helps explain the situation.
“Our goal is to provide enough deer to hunt and enjoy but not so many that they cause economic hardship.”
