Looking back at the biggest typical bucks in the Boone and Crockett record books

These days, when folks look to research monster-sized whitetail bucks, they usually turn to the Internet for information. Unfortunately, the web, specifically social media, is rife with giant deer, some grotesquely massive due to being raised and killed on high-fenced ranches.

This can lead neophyte hunters into believing big deer are commonplace and that opportunities abound to harvest genuine wall-hangers.
Truth is, harvesting a Pope and Young (P&Y) or Boone and Crockett (B&C) qualifying deer is difficult. Matter of fact, in my home state of Minnesota, only one in every 100 bucks killed will score 100 Boone and Crockett inches.

Nebraska provides exciting winter waterfowling action

The 2024 Minnesota waterfowl season left me unsatiated – a feeling that nagged at me until I began planning an out-of-state waterfowling foray.
Just like many other Minnesota waterfowlers, the myriad days of stagnant action this past season left me craving more, scheming to extend my duck-hunting days. My first thought was a trip to southeastern Texas to chase birds on vast Sam Rayburn Reservoir, a body of water I know well. However, I had neither the time nor desire to trek 19 hours one way for a waterfowl trip.

A downer duck season overall in Minnesota ends with a bang

Waterfowling is not supposed to be like bowhunting, where for every successful day there are plenty that have zero action. Unfortunately, Minnesota duck hunters just finished enduring a season so filled with down days that some have permanently hung up their duck gear.
That reaction may be a bit extreme, because no one can control the vagaries of Mother Nature. While more anecdotal than scientific, my observations from spending countless days on vast Swan Lake this past spring and summer were that the upcoming season would be below average.

Bucks of summer provide a great viewing experience

My pal Paul resides on a hobby farm that, among other things, provides a heap of open pasture space upon which to train my dogs, shoot our hunting bows at 3-dimensional targets set up against a wooded backdrop, and view myriad wildlife. Because of that, the place has been a second home for me for decades.
A few days ago, I made a short foray to Paul’s place to run young Labrador, Jet, and to shoot my newest hunting bow. While hiking to the archery range, I surveyed the adjacent grain field for animal life, a second-nature action for me, and saw three impressive bucks calmly browsing along the field edge.

An archer’s guide to outsmarting the wind

Dealing with wind currents has to be at the top of a bowhunter’s checklist when choosing optimal stand locations. Failing to take wind direction, or hunting poor wind direction, will alert deer to a hunter’s presence long before they are seen or heard crunching leaves under hooves.
Deer, and all other big game, can discern human odor at incredible distances, sometimes more than a half mile.

A late-season bowhunt in South Dakota eventually delivers during the secondary rut

I had a South Dakota archery tag burning a hole in my pocket all season, and I was itching to punch it. The problem was, my work schedule was jam-packed, and I had waterfowl- and pheasant-hunting plans.
So, bowhunting for Dakota deer looked to be unlikely until I made a hard decision to disregard work responsibilities and trek west to the South Dakota/Montana border region to chase whitetails with my recurve bow.

Hoofin’ it for ducks: Experience the joys of the jump-shoot

The Minnesota waterfowl season has been a head-scratcher at times. The year began with pretty good success, as reported by a wide range of hunters across the state. But that enthusiasm quickly waned as mild weather kept ducks from migrating from northern haunts to Minnesota sloughs.
Then, local ducks soon wised up, giving even grizzled waterfowlers fits. Perplexingly, even when an arctic blast hit North Dakota, blanketing outstanding duck habitat in snow and ice, ducks seemed to have skipped over vast sections of our state.
