New York Department of Environmental Conservation, Cornell studying Oneida Lake walleyes

Oneida Lake and its famed walleye fishery are among the most-studied and best-understood in the world.
Now, the knowledge gleaned over the last six decades by Cornell University’s Biological Field Station, at Shackleton Point on the lake’s south shore, is about to be augmented in a big way.
Cornell and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are launching a new, three-year walleye telemetry study on the lake. The aim?
“This information will be used to improve DEC’s understanding and management of walleye in the state’s third-most fished lake,” Steve Hurst, chief of the DEC’s Bureau of Fisheries, said.

New York town will ban hunting, trapping at its parks after February incident

The Oneida County town of New Hartford’s board recently voted to bar hunting and trapping activities at its public parks in reaction to a February incident in which five beaver carcasses were found along the Philips A. Rayhill Memorial Recreational Trail, which is adjacent to a large mitigation pond.
“We are not against gun owners or hunters or trappers,” town supervisor Paul Miscione said. “We just can’t have it in our parks and playgrounds.”

Beaver carcases stir trapping debate at nature trail in New York

Several beaver carcasses were found on a popular hiking trail in the Town of New Hartford, in Oneida County, in February, and some area citizens are upset about it.
While state and local officials say no laws were broken, representatives of the Woodhaven Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in nearby Chadwicks plan to pursue the issue.
