Access expansion at Pennsylvania’s Twenty-mile Creek opens up opportunity for steelhead fishing

Twenty-mile creek, in Erie County, is a tributary to Lake Erie that will always hold a special place in my heart, and a recent change to re-access waters that had been closed to the public for a couple of decades is going to recharge my fondness for the waterway.
The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission announced Jan. 13 that it acquired an easement that regenerates nearly 9,000 linear feet of public fishing access upstream from the highway bridge at Route 5. It is the largest public fishing easement acquisition to date.

Northern Pennsylvania hunting preserve is a refuge for heroes

The mission of the “L-E-E-K” Hunting and Mountain Preserve here is to provide hunts of a lifetime for externally and mentally injured soldiers.
The L-E-E-K facility is located on 411 acres, and thanks to neighboring farmers and surrounding public forests, the organization has access to more than 40,000 additional acres. Proprietor Edward Fisher is proud of the inclusiveness of this organization, which serves veterans of all ages and all wars.

In Pennsylvania’s Presque Isle Bay, big bass are waiting

Being raised in Erie County, just one mile south of Lake Erie’s shoreline, I remember with unusual fondness, the June bugs (a winged beetle), that flew around our faces during sandlot baseball games, which continued until it was too dark to see the ball.
The memory came to me as I approached the parking area of Lampe Marina, in the city of Erie, for a June bass fishing trip, and I found myself strangely wondering if those June bugs would be suitable nutrition for Presque Isle bass. In my mind, there are no bass anywhere that rivals the average, Lake Erie bass. The population is good and average sizes are spectacular.

Catch the lunkers of Neshannock Creek in Pennsylvania this spring

Neshannock arguably ranks among the top five trout streams in northwest Pennsylvania and should be considered in the top two dozen trout fisheries in the entire state.
The 2.3 mile-long, Delayed Harvest, Artificial Lures Only section, extending from the spillway, at the tiny burg of Volant, extending downstream to the Banks Covered Bridge, which crosses the creek on Covered Bridge Road, is managed as well as any DHALO-designated water.

With ticks, an ounce of prevention definitely worth a pound of cure

Anecdotal reports have claimed that deer ticks are out earlier, and are more numerous than in past late winters or early springs – a concern for hunters, campers and even anglers in some situations.
Ticks feed on the blood of animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and humans. They can transmit pathogens between animals and humans, including bacteria, viruses, and parasitic worms. The worst of these for Pennsylvanians are Lyme disease, deer tick disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Strategies for spring steelhead on Lake Erie tributaries

By the time spring comes around, the fish have spent months with fewer food sources, and most have released a major portion of their energy during the spawning process. Adding to the challenge for anglers is the likelihood that a holdover steelhead has seen dozens of imitations and was likely caught and released several times while in the tributary. Each experience leaves an impression on the fish’s instinct to survive.
More finesse, a little luck, and a lot of persistence will be required to catch spring steelhead. Consider these items, which might help.

Find a Trail: Hike to stomp all over winter’s blues

Instead of moaning because I blew a shot opportunity at a deer that busted from its bed, I grin at the event. A few weeks earlier, my reaction would have been quite different, but all of Pennsylvania’s hunting seasons had concluded, so a fleeing deer was amusing rather than distressing.
On this day, I am hiking completely free of extracurricular challenges. I am in the woods for no other reason than to enjoy being outdoors.
