Sportsman profile: Dan Kimmel is Michigan’s bass fishing ambassador

Bass fishing – especially tournament bass fishing – is extremely popular in Michigan. Driven in large part by its tremendous smallmouth bass fishery (especially in the Great Lakes and connected waters) nearly 65,000 anglers participated in 2,700 bass fishing tournaments in 2023.
While these numbers highlight the growing popularity of bass fishing, they also shine a light on the importance of protecting this valuable fishery. Despite the seemingly endless opportunities to catch trophy bass in Michigan, bass (and the anglers who target them), need an advocate. Fortunately, former bass tournament pro Dan Kimmel has been happy to fill the role.

Fall is here and once again outdoor enthusiasts are overwhelmed with hunting and fishing opportunities.
The arrival of coho salmon in the Great Lakes added yet another option in the autumn of 1967 – an option that has repeatedly been one of the most popular.
The return of coho salmon to Michigan’s Platte Bay in the fall of ’67 was the culmination of Howard Tanner’s dream. The director of fisheries for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at the time, Tanner had been working for years to prove the viability of a Pacific salmon fishery in the Great Lakes. But such sudden popularity had a dark side, and includes a tragedy worth recounting as anglers again head out on the Great Lakes for fall salmon runs.

Lead core line still productive for walleyes

Successful trolling for walleye is an exercise in efficiency. The more efficient anglers are at keeping the maximum number of lures in front of the fish, the more success they will have.
During a recent Michigan DNR walleye fishing school on Saginaw Bay, walleye fishing guru and Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame member Mark Martin put on a clinic in efficiency by teaching students an often-overlooked trolling method: running crankbaits behind lead-core line.

Michigan’s Becoming an Outdoors Woman program leader thrives on outdoors experiences

Despite being born in the heart of wild country in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and surrounded by friends and family members who hunted and fished, Michelle Douglas didn’t form a meaningful connection to the outdoors until adulthood.
Like many women, Douglas’ early missed outdoor opportunities were not borne of a lack of desire, but a lack of opportunities.
