Sportsman profile: Dan Kimmel is Michigan’s bass fishing ambassador

Dan Kimmel was all smiles after catching this Lake St. Clair smallmouth bass. Kimmel works with government and nongovernment organizations to promote the sport of bass fishing and to protect and enhance the health of Michigan’s bass fisheries. (Photo provided)

Bass fishing – especially tournament bass fishing – is extremely popular in Michigan. Driven in large part by its tremendous smallmouth bass fishery (especially in the Great Lakes and connected waters) nearly 65,000 anglers participated in 2,700 bass fishing tournaments in 2023.
While these numbers highlight the growing popularity of bass fishing, they also shine a light on the importance of protecting this valuable fishery. Despite the seemingly endless opportunities to catch trophy bass in Michigan, bass (and the anglers who target them), need an advocate. Fortunately, former bass tournament pro Dan Kimmel has been happy to fill the role.
