Bobcats once again thriving in Ohio

Bobcats are definitely on the comeback in Ohio. And it’s a good thing.
That’s the message biologist Shauna Weyrauch, Ph.D, delivered to about 60 attendees during an Aug. 9 seminar at the Ohio Wildlife Center. Weyrauch teaches biology at Ohio State University’s Newark campus. She has been studying the feline’s return to Ohio for about 10 years.

Ohio’s duck zones could change in 2026 hunt

In response to input from the hunting public, the Ohio DNR’s wildlife division amended its proposed waterfowl hunting zones for the 2026-2030 seasons.
Mike Reynolds, administrator of wildlife management and research for the Division of Wildlife, told state wildlife council members during a July public hearing the zone changes proposed in April drew 179 responses during the comment period that ran June 9 to July 9.

Ohio research bear slips out of radio collar

“She’s a smart bear.”
That’s the verdict wildlife biologist Katy Dennison has for a sow bear that slipped her GPS monitoring collar off and disappeared on July 15. The female bear was collared by Ohio Division of Wildlife personnel on June 3 as part of a multi-year research program (in conjunction with the University of Dayton) aimed at learning how bears live and reproduce so humans can better adapt to Ohio’s growing number of bruins.

Ohio bear sightings on the rise

More sightings of black bears in Ohio this year could mean more bears are calling the state home. Or, it could mean more cell phones and doorbell cameras are catching more bruins on the wander, according to Katy Dennison, a biologist with the Ohio DNR’s wildlife division.
There is plenty of evidence that it is the former, not the latter.

Budget offers some hope for Ohio DNR funding

Opposition from sportsmen to the Ohio Senate’s version of the 2026-2027 state budget paid off.
Bonus money from oil and gas leases in state wildlife areas will continue to go for improvements, land acquisition, and shooting range updates, following action by the general assembly’s conference committee and Gov. Mike DeWine. DeWine signed the final version of the budget into law on June 30.

Ohio budget wrangling could cost DNR funds

Budget time in Ohio could spell a setback in revenue for Ohio State Parks and Watercraft unless the General Assembly’s conference committee or Gov. Mike DeWine take action against it.
In the Senate-approved version of the budget bill (HB96), general fund money that would ordinarily go to the park system was cut – at least for the next two years. The Ohio Senate wants $30 million in royalty bonus payments from oil and gas drilling in state parks to make up the resulting shortfall. Thus far, the state has received only bonus money from drilling companies.

Lake Erie Birding Trail guidebook updated, enhanced

A new, more user-friendly Lake Erie Birding Trail Guidebook is now available, reflecting an expanded and enhanced trail stretching 312 miles along the lake’s Ohio shoreline, according to Jamey Emmert, avian educator with the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Emmert, a self-professed “bird nerd,” is the guide’s primary author. Ohio Sea Grant funded the design and printing.

Oil, gas revenue stands at $60M in Ohio coffers; how will it be spent?

What is the state of Ohio doing with money earned from oil and gas leases in state parks and wildlife areas?
That’s the question the general public is asking, especially members of Save Ohio Parks, an environmental advocacy organization that opposes drilling under public lands. The 2011 law that opened the door to drilling (and fracking) in parks, wildlife areas, and land owned by the Ohio Department of Transportation laid down specific rules for how those profits would be used.

Ohio’s waterfowl zones could be changed starting in 2026

Input from hunters and results of late fall waterfowl surveys prompted the Ohio DNR’s wildlife division to propose new waterfowl hunting zones for the 2026 to 2030 seasons.
The proposed zone changes will not affect the upcoming 2025-26 duck and goose season, according to an agency press release. Mike Ervin, wildlife biology program administrator for the Division of Wildlife, said federal regulations allow the state to re-zone every five years.
