Wisconsin hunter’s first bear is huge 586-pounder that comes on final day of hunt

Wisconsin’s Teri Jo Fendler may not be a bear-hunting expert, but she’s well aware that the Burnett County black bear she shot Sept. 14 is a once-in-a-lifetime trophy.
Fendler made the four-hour trip from her Wautoma home to Burnett County in September to hunt bears for the first time. After sitting in a ground blind for 13 hours a day for five days, her trip was about to end. Then, Fendler’s luck changed in an instant when a big bear showed up out of nowhere.

New owners of popular Antlers Supper Club in Wisconsin will maintain outdoors theme

It may have new owners, but a Shawano County supper club will retain its outdoors-related vibe.
Harlow Arndt and his wife, Tia, recently purchased Antlers Supper Club in Bonduel from Lance and Vicki Olson, who ran the popular business at 120 East Green Bay Street for 17 years. The Arndts take over a business that has been in Vicki Olson’s family for almost 25 years. The Arndts took over from the Olsons April 1.

A coalition of sportsmen’s groups in Oconto County, Wis., is working together toward a common goal of introducing kids to the outdoors in a county that provides plenty of opportunities to do just that.

Quinney Fishing Club makes a difference on Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago

While there usually isn’t much going on in Quinney, a small unincorporated community on Lake Winnebago’s east shore, the local fishing club named for the community has more than 200 members and has donated to several groups and agencies that help keep the Winnebago system’s annual sturgeon spearing and ice fishing seasons safe.
“It’s mostly guys who are pretty dedicated fishermen in our area who want to see the lake be used to its full extent.”

Wisconsin volunteers get crash course on importance of Karner blue butterflies

It may be small – only about the size of a nickel – but the Karner blue butterfly is a big deal to Chelsea Weinzinger.
That’s one of the reasons why Weinzinger, the Wisconsin DNR’s Karner blue recovery coordinator, showed up June 13 at Hartman Creek State Park near Waupaca. She led a group of nine volunteers that will help the DNR monitor the population of Karner blue butterflies, a federally endangered species and a species of concern in Wisconsin.
“Karners are a federally endangered species and Wisconsin holds the largest population in the world, so it is important to monitor the species,” she said.

Wisconsin’s Waupaca County delegate suggests shooting hour changes for waterfowl, turkey hunting

A Waupaca County Conservation Congress delegate, Bob Peterson, thinks he can simplify shooting hours for waterfowl and turkey hunters by eliminating the current northern and southern zone hours, which he said can confuse hunters.
Peterson, of Waupaca, offered his idea in the form of a resolution April 14 at the county’s spring fish and wildlife hearings at Waupaca High School.

Deer meeting in Wisconsin’s Waupaca County turns to talks about CWD concerns

While the Waupaca County’s County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC) met May 1 for three hours to make recommendations for the 2025 deer seasons, much of that time was spent discussing local cases of chronic wasting disease.
CDAC member Bob Leder, of Bear Creek, a retired large-animal veterinarian, opened the CWD discussion. Although the vast majority of CWD-positive deer have been reported in southwestern Wisconsin’s Iowa, Dane, Richland, and Sauk counties, the disease was reported for the first time last year in Chippewa, Pierce, Manitowoc, and Menominee counties.

Wisconsin’s Sturgeon Guard back to work with spawning underway

Sporting a fluorescent green Sturgeon For Tomorrow vest, Tom Markowski and Mike Schmalzer stood out like sore thumbs as lake sturgeon cruised the Fox River in downtown Princeton, Wis.
The pair were two of more than 100 volunteers who hit the river behind Princeton’s Water Street April 19 for the start of the annual spawning run up the Fox and Wolf rivers. Markowski and Schmalzer headed to Princeton from their homes in Redgranite and Rosendale, respectively, as Sturgeon Guards, part of a group of more than 100 volunteers who keep an eye on crowds as DNR crews capture, record information from, and release hundreds of fish each year.

Wisconsin’s spawning sturgeon on the Fox River mean an opportunity for research

A local high school fishing club was able to get up close and personal with spawning lake sturgeon on the Fox River in Wisconsin.
The annual sturgeon spawning ritual on the Fox River in Princeton kicked off with DNR crews using electrofishing boats and a light electrical current to temporarily stun sturgeon so they could be captured and “scienced.” Members of Princeton High School’s fishing club waited on shore to help measure and tag fish.
