Minnesota DNR seeks input on updates to pheasant, waterfowl plans

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is asking for feedback on pheasant and duck management which will inform updates to the state’s duck and pheasant action plans.
“We’re starting the process to refresh these two action plans to reflect current conditions and public priorities and to inform near-term management priorities for 2025-2030,” said Leslie McInenly, DNR wildlife populations and regulations manager. “We’re in the scoping phase of the updates and there will be additional input opportunities once we have adjustments to propose for these plans.”

Iowa’s spring turkey season right around the corner; here’s what to know

Coming off record harvests in 2020 and again in 2023, Iowa’s spring turkey hunters could be living in the “good ol’ days.” And with three straight years of good hatches across much of the state, roughly 35,000 hunters are ready to hit the woods.
“Two-year-old birds drive the population, do lots of the gobbling and tend to move more than the older toms, which is what hunters like,” said Jim Coffey, forest wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Hunters like to hear a lot of birds and not see other hunters.”

Public asked to comment on updated Wisconsin DNR elk management plan

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public input on updates to the state’s Elk Management Plan now through April 20, 2024.
Updates to the 2024-2034 Elk Management Plan include changes based on recommendations from the Natural Resources Board, Wisconsin Elk Advisory Committee and feedback from private landowners in the elk management zones.

Wisconsin DNR announces early closure of river otter trapping season in state’s Northern Zone

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on March 26 announced the closure of the river otter trapping season in the Northern Zone effective April 1, 2024, at midnight. Trappers are projected to reach the statewide harvest quota of 2,500 river otters within the next week.

Michigan DNR announces field trial for the study of vaccinating deer against bovine tuberculosis

A field study is underway in Alpena County, Mich., to evaluate the delivery of an oral bovine tuberculosis (bTB) vaccine for wild deer.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is collaborating with Michigan State University (MSU) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service-Wildlife Services (USDA-WS) to explore the development of a new, future tool to manage bTB, which could help to further protect wildlife, livestock and the public from this disease.

Minnesota DNR seeks input on state’s muskie plan update

The Minnesota DNR is asking people to share their thoughts on how the DNR manages muskellunge as part of an update to the state’s muskie long-range plan.
“We’re gathering input as we update our muskie plan for the future,” said Leslie George, northeast region fisheries manager. “As a first step in updating the plan, we’re asking about the experiences and interests of anglers and others related to muskie management.”

Iowa’s Prairie Chicken Festival is April 6

The unique courtship of Iowa’s prairie chickens will be on full display at Iowa’s Kellerton Grasslands Bird Conservation Area on April 6, during the annual Prairie Chicken Festival, in Ringgold County.
The festival will be held at the Kellerton viewing platform, two miles west and one mile south of Kellerton. There is ample parking and the viewing platform is accessible for those with limited mobility.

Iowa DNR investigates tree and fire vandalism at Big Creek State Park

On March 15 around 10:30 p.m. several local law enforcement agencies were called to Big Creek State Park to extinguish an illegal bonfire at the east boat ramp, which was allegedly set by a party of youths. When officials arrived on scene, the youths dispersed. No arrests have been made.
