Accomplished Michigan angler breaks state record with ‘monstrous’ white perch
While still-fishing with minnow bait recently in St. Clair County, Mich., an angler from Adrian caught a state-record fish: a white perch weighing 2 pounds, 5.92 ounces and measuring 16.25 inches.
Scott Smith was fishing with a friend on Lake St. Clair, the expansive freshwater basin that connects Lake Huron and Lake Erie, the afternoon of April 25 when he reeled in what he called a “monstrous” white perch. Their last catch of the day, the fish ended up being a record-breaker.

Wisconsin DNR sets harvest quotas for 2024 elk season
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources today presented the elk harvest quotas for the Black River Elk Zone and Clam Lake Elk Zone to the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board.
The DNR approved an eight-bull harvest quota for the Clam Lake Elk Zone and a four-bull harvest for the inaugural season within the Black River Elk Zone. Per treaty rights, the Ojibwe tribes may declare up to half of the harvest quota within the Ceded Territory, which includes the Clam Lake Elk Zone.

Clear Lake opened to unlimited fishing in Minnesota’s Sibley County
The Minnesota DNR has opened Clear Lake in Sibley County to unlimited fishing, allowing anglers to harvest fish that would likely not survive the upcoming winter during low water conditions on the 505-acre lake.
As part of a project to improve fish and wildlife habitat on Clear Lake, this spring the DNR will begin to lower the lake’s water levels.

Iowa’s Scholastic Clay Target Program crowns international skeet, bunker trap champions
Iowa’s Scholastic Clay Target Program held championship events for International Skeet and International Bunker Trap on May 18-19. These events are the same as what are competed in at the Olympics. International Skeet was held at the New Pioneer Gun Club, while the International Bunker Trap Championship was held at the AVAD Hunt Club, near Coon Rapids.

Iowa DNR looking for CWD Ambassadors to help limit the spread of disease in the state
Chronic Wasting Disease Ambassadors is a collaborative education program between the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach that seeks to help Iowans address the challenge of chronic wasting disease. Hunters, landowners, and conservationists interested in learning more about chronic wasting disease are encouraged to attend a course offering June 11, 18, and 25 at the Rathbun Fish Hatchery, in Appanoose County.

Iowa residents can try fishing without buying a license on June 7, 8 and 9 as part of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ free fishing weekend. All other regulations remain in place.

Michigan DNR awarding over $1.7 million in grants to benefit fish and aquatic systems
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is awarding more than $1.7 million in Fisheries Habitat Grants for conservation projects on lakes and streams statewide. The funds are matched by more than $950,000 in partner contributions, for a total conservation value of about $2.7 million.
“These grants provide critical funding for projects that yield cleaner water, healthier fish populations and better aquatic habitats – all of which make the outdoors safer and more enjoyable for residents,” said Randy Claramunt, chief of the DNR Fisheries Division.
